Hailing from the Strand area in the Western Cape, Adin Masencamp is a fast natural-footer who knows how to win heats. He packs in the moves, and surfs at lightning speed. It’s no wonder his favourite surfer is Mick ‘White Lightning’ Fanning. His homebreak is Caves, a quick and barreling right-hand beachbreak wedge in the corner of Koel Bay.
This sort of home training will stand him in good stead amongst the spinning right-hand barrels of Ballito. A multi South African champion, Adin is well versed in competitive tactics, and likes it when the heats are loaded.
Adin showed the country what he has in store at the Billabong Junior Series event at Seal Point back in 2014, when he went to town with his surfing. He won the U16 division with relative easy, finding a natural rhythm with the waves at Seals, and also managed a 4th in the U20 division. Surfing in two divisions and making both finals in one day is an arduous task, but Adin pushed through and surfed incredibly the whole day, eventually winning the Surfer Of The Contest award as well.
At the Billabong Junior Series currently taking place in Ballito there is a huge incentive in place for those surfers in the Boys U18 division. The top two placed surfers will be awarded wildcards into the SSA Ballito Pro Trials presented by Billabong on Sunday 26 June. The winner of the all-South African trials event will land a berth in the R4 million Ballito Pro presented by Billabong. This is what Adin will be gunning for, but the U18 division is one of the most competitive in the country. Adin will have his work cut out for him with surfers like Jordy Maree, Joshe Faulkner and Sebastian Williams all trying to get one of those two slots.
