Small waves and some cross, onshore wind didn’t deter competitors surfing in day 3 of competition in the Billabong Junior Series taking place in Ballito.
In the U18 Boys division is was event favourite Adin Masencamp who blitzed his way to the final, where he will come up against top seed Jordy Maree from Kalk Bay. His scores of an 8.83 and 8.57 against Durban’s Bevan Willis saw him advance to the final, while Maree took out Jake Elkington on his way to the final
The final, a top of the rankings showdown between undefeated current WSL Africa Junior No. 1 Maree and No. 3 ranked Masencamp, promises to deliver fireworks on Saturday. Both have already qualified for the two spots in the SSA Ballito Pro Trials presented by Billabong, which takes place on Sunday.
The winner of the 32-man all-South African trials event earns a spot in the R4 million Ballito Pro presented by Billabong, which runs from 27 June to 3 July at Willard Beach.
The final of the U18 Girls’ division will see the only international competitor in the event, Zoe McDougall, take on Kirsty McGillivray. McGillivray is a product of the High Performance Surfing Academy program that took place in Durban last week. McGillivray was a keen and attentive student in the Academy and has shown marked improvement ever since the coaching program under Bruce Jackson.
U16 Girls’ final consists of Sophie Bell, Kai Woolf, Kayla Nogueira and the talented S’Nenhlanhla Makhubu. While the U16 Boys’ final features Karl Steen, Luke Slijpen, Max Elkington and Eli Beukes. Kommetjie surfer Beukes has also been showing great improvement and a determined attitude, which goes far these days. He could be the surprise winner in this division.
Nogueira and Makhubu are also in the U14 Girls’ final, along with Gabi Lailvaux and Zoe Steyn. Good money on Umhlanga surfer Lailvaux on taking out this division.
The U14 Boys final will pit Tide-lee Ireland and Mitch du Preez against York van Jaarsveldt and Nate Spalding.
The U12 Boys’ final is made up of James Ribbink, Alex Townsend, Luke Thomson and Dan Emslie, with young Ribbink as the danger man. Ribbink has been on form lately, and a few great free surfing performances at New Pier have impressed all. His work with the High performance Surfing Academy in Durban has been working wonders with his surfing, and he look set for a great career.
