Living the life of a young chef onboard a yacht and cruising the Caribbean sea we catch up with Micaela Markides and bring her to you as our LW Babe of the Week.
Full name: Micaela Anthea Markides
Day job: Yacht Chef
Likes: Mediterranean food, travel, bodybuilding, sunshine and adventure
Dislikes: Being lazy, negativity, judgemental people and bad manners
Special talents: Gymnastics, I was a gymnast for 15 years prior to being a fitness athlete
Give us a quick introduction to Micaela?
I am a young chef, insatiably passionate about creating and connecting with people, I’d like to think my love language is food [laughs]. I am a huge people-pleaser, perfectionist and adventure-seeker. My very long time friend from school used to call me ‘the gypsy’, because I never settle and I’m always out to see and be stimulated by new things, and always been a free-spirit.
What does a day in your life usually consist of?
Usually I am on a yacht in the Caribbean, where I’d spend my mornings developing recipes and menus for charter guests who board the yacht, I then prepare lunch and dinner for the crew every day. After dinner I would scout out the marina gym or do a workout on deck to get my body moving. Most evenings would end in some socialising on deck with crew or enjoying the ocean sunsets.
What do you like to do with your down time?
I know it sounds so cliché for a fitness athlete to say; but I genuinely enjoy being active in any way in my down time. This would either be a walk/ run while listening to some soulful deep-house, meeting friends at the beach to be in the sunshine and water, snorkelling or a good old gym session
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
In five years time I see myself in Spain, where I’d love to open my own fine-dining fusion tapas restaurant, and seeing the world with someone I love.
Given the opportunity to guest star in any Hollywood movie, which would it be and why?
The Endless Summer. Purely so that I could experience all the world’s most beautiful beaches.
Which movie star do you think would best portray your character?
Cameron Diaz, because she seems to be bubbly and unapologetically herself, loves to laugh and make people laugh. She is also strong in her nature and her physicality.
What attracts you to a guy?
Compassion, because I believe it embodies so many essential attributes for a man. Confidence, smell (I’m a big sucker for a good smelling human), and his smile.
In your opinion, what is the sexiest part of a guys body?
Shoulders/ arms. There’s just something about a broad set of shoulders that translates into a good pair of arms. Also, who doesn’t like being held by some strong arms.
You obviously know how to keep in shape. Explain your passion for the fitness lifestyle?
Fitness has always been a part of my life, starting from when I was a high-performance gymnast and now as a competitive fitness bikini athlete. I’m very much an extremist, so I don’t do things in half-measures. I love to immerse myself completely into everything I do and fitness is one of those things I’ll pursue indefinitely. Fitness as a lifestyle for me includes the constant sculpting of one’s body and mind into its most efficient and healthiest state. I can’t see my life void of fitness, it is a part of me.
What have been some of your achievements, and what are you still hoping to achieve?
I have been competing as a fitness bikini athlete for four years, where I have competed in 16 shows and within those shows I have attained 13 titles.
I won two titles at the Arnold Classic Africa 2017, 1st place for Fitness Bikini u23 and 1st place for u1.63m
I also competed at the 2017 World Championships where I placed in the top 10 in the world and received my Protea colours for bodybuilding. My last show, which was the Arnold Classic Africa 2019, I won the title for fitness bikini u1.63m for a second time.
I am still hoping to attain my PRO card, this has been the ultimate dream for me since I started bodybuilding and I am hoping that one day I can achieve this.
With the country going into lockdown due to Coronavirus, have you got any suggestions on how to keep busy during isolation?
I’m a huge advocate for creativity. Find something that can stimulate you creatively. Practicing healthy recipes, writing up fun workouts that are out of the ordinary, go for walks, connect with your family, learn something new through YouTube and podcasts.
How will you be spending your days during this time?
I will be spending my time refocusing on my mental and physical wellbeing. I came back from the Caribbean in February to have a short holiday before I go back to the yachts, but my holiday has obviously been extended because of the virus so I am using this time to adopt healthy habits, regular exercise, self-awareness and self-improvement, recipe and menu development for when I do go back to work and also taking full advantage of this time to actually relax and refuel.
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when we mention:
Ambition? My Career.
Turn on? Putting in effort.
Turn off? Disrespect.
Pet peeve? Loud chewing.
