SA Offroad and Enduro Champion, two-time Roof of Africa winner and overall badass international competitor, Darryl Curtis returned home last week in pretty high spirits following his 22nd overall finish (and 2nd in the amateur division) in the 2012 Dakar Rally. 15 gruelling days through South America (Argentina, Chile, Peru), the Dakar Rally is the toughest, most dangerous off-road endurance race in the world and 2012 was no exception to casualties. Curtis’ 22nd place finish is impressive in itself, but when you consider this is his very first Dakar Rally, well, you really have to hand it to the South African rider. Having touched down at O.R.Tambo to a warm welcome home by friends, family and sponsors – Darryl took some time out for a little Q & A about this year’s Dakar with LW Mag.

The end of 2011 saw Van Coke Kartel release their much anticipated fourth full-length album, “Wie’s Bang” and embark on a nationwide tour which involved them playing in several different parts of the country in just one day (J –Bay, Stillbaai, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town). Could other bands maintain that kind of pace and still deliver a world-class rock ‘n roll performance? Yeah, we think not. There’s no denying that Van Coke Kartel are one of a kind, and “Wie’s Bang” solidifies this original status. LW Mag chatted to Wynand about the new album, band members’ recent nuptials and who is the last man standing in the band after a proper jol!

One could have been forgiven for thinking you had walked onto a beach in the tropics on Saturday, thanks to a windless and sunny day at Llandudno, Cape Town, with some seriously warm water for the Cape. You would also have thought you had been taken back in time as the retro boards, costumes and wetsuits dotted the beach. Fun waves, around a 1000 people and of course fantastic vibes, all came together to further build on the Rolling Retro’s reputation for the most fun day in SA Surfing.
