When it comes to Wakeskating in South Africa, Matti Buys is at the top of his game and most of the time kills the competition. Matti has just been picked up by the Globe Team and has put this awesome “Welcome to the Team” video edit together. We hooked up with Matti to interview him about the sponsorship, the video and his 2013 season:

You have just been picked up by the Globe Shoes team. How did you land this deal and what is Globe expecting from you?
Yeah I’ve been really fortunate to get the deal with Globe, they are a really awesome brand and I really enjoy what they’re about and their overall look and feel of the products. I basically have had a long lasting relationship with Clayton Petersen at Revolution and he has looked after me since I was a grom. Unfortunately DVS, a great brand and product no doubt, was going through some financial difficulty and they’re currently in a rebuilding stage, as Fate would have it Clay approached me with the opportunity to ride and represent Globe, I had known quite a bit about them from the past but after seeing what they’re up to now the decision kinda made itself.
Tell us how this edit ties in with your new sponsorship?
The main focus of the edit was to announce my joining of the Globe Team with a couple tricks and to show the product.
Have you got anything exciting planned with Globe in 2013?
For now our main aim was just to get this video out there, now that this is done we can get working on some new projects.
What are you most excited about with the new sponsorship?
I feel that the Globe brand is one where I really feel I belong, from their overall brand philosophy to their product offering I really do feel they have it right! So I’m really excited to represent them. Their team both internationally and locally is also really cool and unique. I look forward to a good progressive future with some Globe footwear between me and my board.
What was the best part about filming this video?
We were really blessed with some amazing conditions during the filming, it was also cool because we filmed it at my home cable so I was super comfortable riding there.
What’s in store for Matti Buys in 2013?
I would really like to make it out to the US again and possibly compete on some of the Wakeskate tour stops. Other than that I’d like to release some more video clips and just travel around in SA riding my Wakeskate. I have also recently released my Pro Model Wakeskate with Goodwood Wakeskates so I’m pretty excited about that.
Any international trips and comps planned?
Nothing official as of yet, but like I said making it out to the US to ride with Dieter again would be amazing.
What local comps are you amped to compete in?
There aren’t really any local comps, as of yet, that really reflect the true level of Wakeskating in SA or that I can say are really Wakeskate friendly, but a bunch of the local guys here and I are hoping to change that by the end of the year by bringing back that Summer Jam kind of contest.
Which international Wakeskating comps do you think are the best and will you be competing in them?
The Wakeskate Tour is by far the most Wakeskate friendly form of competition out there and really allows for progression in Wakeskating, if I can I would really like to make it out to some of their stops.
What are you goals for 2013?
I kinda took it upon myself to try work more towards the video side of things this year as opposed to that of contests, this project been the first on the agenda. So I’m hoping to get together with some more riders and videographers to get more videos and also photos out there.
