The 2020 UCI Downhill MTB World Cup season finally kicked off at the weekend with a double-header round in Maribor, Slovenia. Round 1 kicked off with qualifying on the Thursday (15 October) and race runs on the Friday (16 October) and saw riders dealing with wet and wild conditions.
Reece Wilson, the new World Champion, qualified in 1st for the Men’s Race, but a crash during race day’s practice saw him sidelined for the rest of the weekend. Greg Minnaar, who had qualified in 20th, put down a time of 3:12.852 that could not be matched by most that followed. Matt Walker managed to better Minnaar’s time with 3:12.002 that would see him take 4th overall. The top three spots of the podium were claimed by the French riders with Thibaut Dapréla in 3rd with 3:10.902, Rémi Thirion in 2nd with 3:10.55 and a dominant Loris Vergier with 3:07.903.

In the Women’s Race Marine Cabirou sent down a brilliant and fast run with a time of 3:43.595 that would ultimately take the win. Myriam Nicole secured 2nd place with a time of 3:49.710 followed by Tracey Hannah in 3rd with a time of 3:50.774.
