Over the weekend, YoYo’s in Lambert’s Bay played host to the country’s best men and junior surfers as they competed in the WSL Vans Surf Pro Classic, chasing a R50 000 prize purse and valuable QS and WSL Africa regional ranking points.
Jordy Maree dominated from start to finish in the Junior Final and claimed his first JQS event title. Scoring 8.33 and 9.33 in his opening rides, Maree put his opponents in a combination situation from the start. Adin Masencamp and Max Elkington needed to improve on both their counting scores when the heat ended. Jake Elkington put in a 7.67 but still need a higher score of 9.99.
The Men’s Semifinals were closely contested. In the first it was Beyrick De Vries against Davey Brand. De Vries scored 8.83 and 7.77. Brand scored 7.93 and 8.33, needing 8.28 to place in the final, he just missed it when scoring an 8.10 in his last ride of the semi.
The second saw Michael February against Matt McGillivray. February scored a massive 9.50 and 9.60. McGillivray put himself into contention with a perfect 10 point score but still needed a 9.10, which he didn’t get the opportunity and had to settle for 3rd overall.
The Men’s Final saw Michael February and Beyrick De Vries go head to head in spectacular, highflying fashion. Both surfers showcased their skills above the lip seeing both post a pair of eight-point scores. In the end it was De Vries who impressed the judges most and claimed his first QS event title.
De Vries scored an 8.67 and 8.47.
February scored 8.23 and 8.07.
