The inaugural downhill longboard skateboarding race called the Urban Descent will take place on the 6th October in the streets of Glenwood, KZN. A collaboration between Gunslinger Longboards and Quiksilver that is expected to attract up to 100 of the country’s fastest and best longoarders.
Longboarding has mainly been active in Cape Town and with a number of events taking place, the sport has started to flourish over the past few years in KZN. The routs will be over 1 kilometer long and will feature a numerous amount of chicanes lined with hay bales for security for the high speeding competitors. Starting in Maze Road and going down to J.B marks Road. With expected speeds of up to 70 km/h the race is expected to attract the likes of Ricki Allardice, Anton Pratt and Raoul Van Den Burgh, all top competitors from Cape Town. Durban favourites Stuart Purchase, Jed Kenny and Bryce Gardner with also be competing for top honours.
Racing will get underway with 7 rounds of qualifying starting at 9am. Divisions will include Junior Boys 8 – 14yrs, Junior Boys 15 – 17yrs, Open ladies and Open Men. Top finishers will make it through to the finals expected to starts at 12pm onwards. Competitors will be competing for the R5000 cash prize as well as product from Quiksilver. Gunslinger Longboards, DC Shoes and GoPro.
