Over the last few weeks, we’ve had the chance to play around with TomTom’s new action camera, The Bandit. The main objective of this gadget was to make it as simple as possible to use, and they have achieved just that. Perfect for any Action Sports athlete, fan or lifestyle junkie, and just in time for Christmas. Here’s what we experienced with The Bandit.
Probably, if not, the most user friendly action camera on the market. TomTom has eliminated the use of cables completely. Charging and connection to a computer are done via the built in USB on the “Batt-Stick”. The Batt-Stick is a standalone unit and includes the USB plug, battery and microSD slot. Transfer footage and charge your camera at the same time.
Navigation through The Bandit’s setting are simple, both on the camera itself and the smartphone app. Filming at 1080P 60FPS or cinematic 4K 15FPS with time lapse and slow-mo options, you just cant go wrong.
The G-Force, Rotation, Speed, Altitude and Accelerations sensors record data and are used to mark highlight footage for editing. Editing footage can be done in minutes through the app without downloading any of the footage first. Once you are happy with your edit, you then can download it to your device for sharing.
The smartphone app is amazing and lets you view, edit and download photos and video to your device with ease via WiFi.
Once you have finished filming, just open the app to watch and edit your footage. The Bandit automatically highlights sections of the video, which you can the edit to be longer or shorter, or even add highlights. You can then “Create A Story” by choosing the highlights you want, then just shake your phone and the app will sort the footage into a cool video for you to share. Easy as that! You also have the option of including a speed, g-force, altitude or heart-rate overlay on the video, as well as a soundtrack.
We used the TomTom Bandit during a Motocross race and literally put this video together in minutes after the race, with the speed overlay and without a soundtrack:
There are generous amount of accessories for The Bandit enabling you to use it in any circumstance. The camera also swivels on its mount so you can make sure to get the perfect view angle by turning/ rotating it.
