Cape Town had the privilege of hosting the first round of the Monster Energy – The Street Series, an international BMX street contest that takes place in the streets of various cities around the world with a host on top local and international riders competing.

Cape Town was experiencing a heat wave on the day of the contest, 16 February, and the start time was moved from 12pm to 3pm. The first spot was at the rail at the Seapoint Library where Ben Lewis caught most of the attention by landing most of his tricks first try. Ed Zunda and Paul Ryan trailed close behind him. Trick were flying furiously on the rail and a few impressive trains, something that you’d normally only see at trails, went down. Ice Picks, Pegs, No Handers out, Bars out…you name it and the riders were pulling it. Stand out local riders were Dean Bailey who was trying tricks up the rail and also landed a Double Peg to Barspin down the rail. Werner Hendrich nailed a Double Peg after crashing hard earlier on. Some riders skipped the rail completely and just sessioned the set of stairs.

The curved ledges under the traffic circle near Greenpoint Stadium was the send spot for the day. Ben Lewis Feebled the entire ledge finishing it off with a 360 out, smooth as butter. Paul Ryan had a burst of energy and went crazy linking impressive lines constantly. A stand out trick came from Ed Zunda which was an insane Nose to Smith to Nose to Barspin. Such a technical trick which Ed put together cleanly.

The final stop for the day was H-Street. Some rad synchronised stunts were pulled off down the stairs by Murry and Morgan. Paul Ryan was on form landing an array of tricks one of them being a Truckdriver. Ben Lewis opposite Ice Picked the big Hubba. Greg Illingworth, unfortunately out of the contest due to injury, towed Felix in on a scooter so he could gap the huge double set all the way down to the road. Ed Zunda ended off the contest by pulling one of the biggest 360’s SA had ever seen, clearing the entire double set and his second try.

The international riders cleaned up by taking all 3 steps of the podium. Thanks to Monster Energy, DUB and Greg Illingworth for making this awesome event possible & a shout-out goes to everyone that came out to support the amazing day of riding. The second round of The Street Series will be taking place in Barcelona on the 30th March 2014.
