The Jonway Scooter 101 Championship Series – Round 3

Round 3 of the Jonway Scooter101 Championship Series was held at the Vereeniging Kart Circuit called ‘Adrenalin Raceway’. As usual the guys were super pumped and when I thought I was early the mini moto guys still beat me to the track at 6am. The entries were huge with over 100 riders including mini moto guys. After registration and riders briefing we started rolling the guys out onto the track for free practice. This lasts for 15min so the guys can learn the track before their qualifying round. After practice of the stock and open classes, the guys had a small break before the qualifying. All the game faces were on as the grown, fun stock class went out for qualifying.

The battle was immediately determined by the 4-stroke scooters in front (the two Jonway C5 300cc scooters ) and the 2 strokers following. The 2-strokes were close but just didn’t have the legs to keep up and each lap the 4-strokers got faster.

Open class qualifying guys went out and showed everyone how it was meant to be – pulling in some sick, fast laps. Once again the Malossi, PRD and Sava team riders gave the rest something to race against. After qualifying everyone rushed to the timing board where it was like flies on poop as they all tried to see what their gate positions were going to be.

It ended up being in stock class: 1st Clinton Achadinha on the Jonway, 2nd Louw Du Toit on the Vespa and then Jaco Joubert on the Jonway in the front row!

Open class qualifying standings were: 1st Dean Wheeler, Erick Flowerday and then Jeremy Pincus on the front row.

The heats were up next and everyone was super-pumped as we saw a lot of changes in the front runners and knew the results would change dramatically if we had a different winner in stock and open class.

Jeremy Pincus brought through his newly designed PRD scooter that looked like a GP bike and was definitely getting in all the other competitors heads with the looks and design. He had an amazing bee-sting tail and lowered bars with footpegs to give him the stance that he feels a lot more comfortable riding with. You could see he spent ALOT of time on his baby! But after all that time spent was he going to take home the gold?

Heat 1 stock class pretty much determined the exact result throughout the whole day where everyone landed up in the same position as they finished in heat 1 but the ultimate battle was definitely for 1st place with the two C5 Jonway 300cc’s. With Clinton and Jaco battling it out for first place – it was all about who braked last and who had more corner speed. They pushed each other to the edge but at the end Jaco took 1st and Clint took 2nd place and Louw placed 3rd. Only in heat 3 did Clinton really try out race himself and landed up having the most insane crash straight into the barrier on the start finish straight. He still got 3rd place overall with Jaco taking the overall win and Louw taking 2nd place.

Open class heats were insane, as usual, with all the riders from the team tents death-staring each other in the pits, trying to psych the other rider out before the race. With Dean Wheeler having the best qualifying time around the track he was put in pole! ( 1:03.667 ). Heat 1 of open class was an elbow-bashing-in-your-face-smashing endurance race where only the strongest lasted. At the end Erick Flowerday took the win, Dean in 2nd and Jeremy in 3rd. That’s what everyone thought  the results would be in heat 2 and 3. But we had the heavens opened up on us and added a pretty curve ball with some rain. As we waited for the rain to stop and the track to dry up slightly we sent them crazies out there again for round 2. At the end of heat 2 Erick took the win, Louw worked himself up to 2nd and Dean dropped down to 3rd place. The final of the open class was insane where Dean really pushed himself to the limits and Jeremy showed that the old guys can still whip the laatjies in to gear. Open class overall standings were Erick Flowerday in 1st, Dean Wheeler in 2nd and Louw Du Toit in 3rd place! Erick once again put down one insane fast lap time for V-Towns race: 1:02:687.
