A brand new rock band to the South African music scene is The Jack Rolling Dandy’s who have just released their music video for their self titled single and we think it rocks! With a band name as cool as theirs, a music video as cool as theirs and a style as cool as theirs we had to hook up an interview with the band about the video and the band itself. After watching the awesome music video, check out what the brainchild of The Jack Rolling Dandy’s, Kaihl, had to say:
Tell us about The Jack Rolling Dandy’s.
The Jack Rolling Dandy’s is the musical project of Kaihl Thomas Meades, I write the songs and play all the instruments in studio as well as doing the vocals. I will be putting together the band in may in the ‘Who are The Dandy’s Search’.
How long have you been around?
The Jack Rolling Dandy’s is brand spanking new, we launched our first single on the 4th of February and our debut video on the 18th of March. I’ve been making music for nearly ten years and have been working in the music industry for the last 5 years.
How did you get started?
I believe it’s my destiny to make music and to reach the world through my tunes. The Jack Rolling Dandy’s idea arose from the fact that almost all the bands out there at the moment are ‘jeans and a t-shirt’ bands, I was intensely hungry for something fresh and exciting and no one was supplying it so I decided to do it myself.

Why the name?
The name comes from an old Irish saying, what the saying means exactly I can’t find anywhere but there’s a book called “the jack roller” about juvenile delinquency and ‘dandy’ means a man who takes pride in his dress or something excellent in its class, so what I take away from that is being a Jack Rolling Dandy is being the best you can be and enjoying it with a childlike outlook.
In what music genre would you place your music?
The Music is definitely Rock! With big driving bass lines and a tambourine and a couple of explosions thrown in for good measure.
Where are you from?
I am originally from Welkom in the Northern Free state, I studied Sound engineering for 2 years in Joburg at the ASE and have been in Potchefstroom since, I plan on moving to Centurion later this year as I see it being more beneficial for the band to be placed between 2 of the music capitals in the country.
You have just released your music video for the single “The Jack Rolling Dandy” – what message does the song have?
The song is autobiographical, I chose it as our first single because it introduces me and introduces The Jack Rolling Dandy’s to the World. The song is basically about where I came from and where I’m going and some of the people and places that have had a big influence on my life so far.
What did you try to capture in the music video and how did the concept of the video come about?
We planned on making something Epic! An in your face video with unforgettable moments, we wanted to make something so good that even if you didn’t like the song or didn’t even have sound with it, it would still blow your mind. I did the concept and the planning pre-shoot, writing the scenes and what I envisioned second by second and the shoot was done by Stefan Louw from Koring Kriek, who found us the most insane location ever, got the fantastic shots you see in the video and put it all together so well.

Where was the video shot and how long did it take?
The video was shot in an abandoned warehouse area, we received permission to shoot there because the people said that the place had been abandoned due to chemicals and harmful substances that had made a lot of the workers sick, so we could shoot but it was at our own risk. We started shooting at about 12 in the afternoon and finished by about 8, we knew which shots we wanted and exactly how we wanted them to happen so we worked very efficiently getting the best shots we could first time.
Did anyone get hurt during the filming of the stunts?
The two guys in the fight scene fell on pieces of glass from the glasses they threw at each other and cut up their back’s a bit but other than some bumps and bruises nothing too bad, the guys were really committed and played into the roles so well, we were incredibly happy with the passion that everyone brought to the shoot.
What was the hardest stunt to film?
Probably not really a stunt, but there’s a scene where the camera is looking down into a hole where everyone is jumping around, the dirt in the hole had a white powder over it and with everyone losing their minds in the hole it kicked it all up, it made it almost impossible to breathe and made the scene really tough.
What was the craziest thing that happened during filming?
Definitely the fight scene, after the wall cupboard gets thrown on Eugene (blonde fighter) and Christian (other fighter) picks up the round wood table to throw at him, everyone was screaming for him not to do it…weather he threw to miss or actually missed I guess we’ll never know.

Who do you think felt the most comfortable in front of the camera and who was the most nervous?
Christian and Eugene relished the camera time and in my opinion made the video the great success it is, the most nervous was probably Stefan from Koring Kriek (the guy sitting at the table that gets set on fire), he’s so comfortable being on the other side of the camera I think it was a bit of a shock to the system being in the spotlight.
What’s next for The Jack Rolling Dandy’s?
Up next for the Dandy’s is the next single coming soon, also 3 collaborations with JMF a genius producer from Cape Town, Ruan Kruger from Straatligkinders and Moses Metro Man and with a new band called The Nest who make dirty dirty rock n roll.
Where can fans see you play in the next few months?
The Jack Rolling Dandy’s will only be starting gigs in July, but we’ll be keeping the fans nice and busy with new tunes and video’s dropping nice and steadily leading up to then.
