SupaDrift Series 07 Race Report

The penultimate round of the 2014 SupaDrift Series took place at the Mmabatho Stadium in Mahikeng over the weekend. A field of over 20 drivers gathered to showcase their drifting skills against each other and put it on the line for valuable championship point.

Precision driving was the order of the weekend with no major upsets. A mechanical failure was picked up by top contender, Wade van Zummerun in his lead during the top 8 taking him out of the event. After making contact with Shane Gutzeit, Otto Graven was also knocked out during the Top 8.

Shane Gutzeit, Jason Webb, Leroy Frans and Paolo Gouveia all made it through to the semi finals but it was Webb and Gouveia who took the wins in the closely fought battles and went on to face each other in the final.

The showdown between Jason Webb and Paolo Gouveia was nothing less than spectacular with two insanely close runs forcing the judges to call a One More Time. In a twist of events Webb found himself shy of tyres and only had used tyres which he fitted for the OMT. This resulted in Webb battling to find traction and Gouveia taking the win. After many times on the podium, this was Gouveia’s first win.

This 7th round of the 2014 Auto Trader SupaDrift Series was dedicated to the up and coming competitor, Riaz Alibai who tragically lost his life last month.

The final round of the premier drifting championship returns to the Durban City Centre on the 28th November. Who will be crowned the 2014 SupaDrift Series champion?
