The band Skylight have been on a 3 year break from the South African music scene and have been busy recording their debut album which is nearly ready to be released. We caught up with lead vocalist, Greg Jorden and bass guitarist, Peter Klein from Skylight to chat to them about their latest single “Give It Up”, why the 3 year break and the upcoming new album.
You guys have just been on a 3 year break and have now released a new single called “Give It Up”. Why the break and what led up to releasing the new single?
Greg Jorden: We needed a break from gigging to focus on recording Made For More (our debut album). We all have day jobs, so we spent most of our spare time in the studio.
Peter Klein: It took longer than expected due to Greg developing nodules on his vocal cords. But with the help of Gerrie Dunham (vocal coach), a more balanced lifestyle, and faith, Greg was able to sing the album.
What have you guys been up to in the past 3 years?
Peter Klein: We spent the past two years in studio with Darryl Torr recording our debut album “Made For More”. It’s bound to blow your minds.
Tell us about the single “Give It Up” and its meaning to you?
Greg Jorden: “Give It Up” is about giving up the things that make you want to give up. It’s about freedom. And we love jamming it!

What is the Skylight relationship like?
Greg Jorden: We’re friends. We do life together. We’re there for each other through the ups and downs. It’s more like a family.
Do any of you have any “special talents” that you are known for?
Peter Klein: Wesley can play every instrument known to man, from the triangle to the clarinet.
When can fans expect some more singles to be released?
Greg Jorden: Oh we have a few up our sleeve that we’re hoping to release before the end of the year. We’d like to stretch “Give It Up” out a bit longer, considering we’ve done the music video, which is wicked by the way.
When are you looking at releasing your album?
Greg Jorden: We’ll be releasing an album called “Made For More”. We’re aiming to have it out in September (tentative).
For people not familiar with the band Skylight, give us some background info on who you guys are, where you came from and how you got the band started?
Peter Klein: We are a pop rock band formed back in 2009. In 2010 the band achieved success, winning the road to Joburg Day competition on 94.7 Highveld Radio and also making it to the top 20 round of SA’s Got Talent.
Greg Jorden: The band was started when I played together with Peter Klein (bass guitar) and Bradley Cumming (drums) at a music event. The chemistry was great and we decided to continue as friends and fellow musicians. We met Wesley Ayliffe (backing vocals and guitar) while recording the album and he joined the band in 2012. We are all local Fourways boys with a passion for music.
What has been your most memorable gig to date? Why?
Peter Klein: It would definitely be Joburg Day 2010, without a doubt. Playing in front of over 18000 people on a large stage was amazing.
What vision do you have for Skylight for the future?
Greg Jorden: We believe that things can be better. We want to be a part of the solution. We’ll do our best to write and play songs that give people hope.
