It’s been over 5 months since the 2012 final round of Scooter101 and it’s like everyone has been in secret mode with all the intense modifications on their new race scooters for 2013. The gates to V-Town opened at 6:00am and the queue that built up already of keen scooter riders burst through the gates to get their usual or better spots in the pits. Everyone offloaded and then the spying game began, a little chit chat was made to the other riders but all that was for is to get closer to your opposing teams scooter to see if you could notice any new tuning parts.
Jonway Gomoto was there in force with an awesome huge Gazebo and under it had all the latest 180cc and the NEW 200cc Ballistic Naked that was going to compete in the stock class. Indy oil set-up an amazing stand with their awesome Dragon goggles and Indy Oil products for scoots and mini motos. As well as Monster Energy SA setting up some awesome ice cold Monsters for all the 101 riders to grab and keep them well energized and cool through the scorcher of the day. Everyone was in super good spirits and you could feel the vibe was electric.
The day started off a bit slow signing in and getting our new MSA licenses but Jonway Gomoto & 101 gave caps to all the scooter entries and kept them smiling even if the queues were long. Because we had a long morning and the NSF100 boys joined us for the day we went straight into Qualifying, missing practice. For most of us this was the first time riding on our new tuned beasts, so it was a bit intimidating.
Stock class was first. Awesome scooters lined up on alongside the pits ready to jump onto the track including the all new Gomoto Ballistic Naked 200cc Which was definitely a big contender! Even the 180cc Ballistics were hauling. After a 15min moto in qualifying we had Louw du Toit in 1st on his 125cc 2-stroke Piagio, Brannigan Achadinha in 2nd on a borrowed BWS from Derek Mc Dougal and Trevor Woolfson in 3rd on a 150cc 4-stroke vespa.
Stock classes heat 1, 2 and 3 went pretty much the same with a slight battle in heat 2 with Trevor and Brannigan but after 3 heats and some serious battles in mid field we finished off the day with Louw Du Toit from Malossi taking the overall win Trevor Woolfson from Malossi taking 2nd overall and Brannigan Achadinha from Team Jonway/Gomoto Monster energy & 101 taking 3rd place.
Open class was another story though. Qualifying was insane with scooters all over the place all pushing some serious horse power. The noise of 28 Open class, highly tuned scooters motoring around Vereeniging kart circuit is one amazing sound. The smell of 2-stroke and afgas in the morning beats a coffee any day.
After qualifying we had Clinton Achadinha in 1st place, Jeremy Pincus in 2nd place and Brannigan Achadinha in 3rd. Jeremy and Clinton battled all of last year and it seems like it might happen again this year. With Clinton on his new Gilera Runner and Jeremy on his highly tuned PGO with water cooling system and who knows what else he has under that seat they battled it off through heats 1,2 & 3 like if it depended on their lives to win this race. I think Clinton Achadinha had a point to prove and trying to set his name in stone cause through all the heats he took 1st place and in heat 3 breaking the circuits record of 1:01 dead by doing a staggering 1:00:4
In 3rd we had an epic battle with Louw and Brannigan with some intense passing and elbow nudging happening. By them battling they were slowing down and the pack from 5th backwards were catching but at the end of all 3 heats Brannigan managed to keep Louw behind him and took 3rd for the day.
The overall Open Class standings are: Clinton Achadinha from Team Jonway/Gomoto, Monster Energy & 101 taking the overall win, Jeremy Pincus from Team PRD taking 2nd overall and Brannigan Achadinha Team Jonway/Gomoto, Monster Energy & 101 taking 3rd overall.

Round 1 was epic and can only get better! Don’t forget our next race is on the 21st March at Zwartkops Raceway.
