SA Music – With so many international acts hitting the shores of South Africa we want to make sure you don’t forget about the awesome local bands we have here that rock out just as hard. The much anticipated Ramfest 2013 is just around the corner and we decided to catch up with one of the opening acts – LOWPROFILE! These Durban locals will be celebrating their 10th year of existence by opening for the huge and much awaited for Rise Against. See what these guys have to say about their band, how they got started, Ramfest 2013 and the future.

When did Lowprofile come about?
In 2003. Out of the ashes of two previous bands who met via a Drummer Wanted ad on punk.co.za
How did you guys get started?
Lowprofile was formed in late October 2003, in a small garage in Westville North by four guys from different corners of Durban who’d met in the forums of a well-known local punk website. Many Spar éclairs and glasses of Twist Granadilla later we became the band we are today.
Were any of you in previous bands before joining Lowprofile?
Lowprofile has, and has had ex-members of Still Thinking, Aleda, Stanley Anvil, Nevertheless and Thorn.
Explain Lowprofile’s style and style of music?
Dress like you’re 24 and live like you’re immortal. The music is fast, up tempo punk rock with politically charged lyrics that is very conducive to skateboarding too.
What has been the best gig you have played so far and why?
The most significant gig we’ve played was opening for Sum41 at The Wavehouse last year. It really introduced the band to a lot of new fans and we started getting noticed, and taken more seriously. Probably our most successful show was our first time on a large stage at Splashy Fen 2010 – the weather was on our side with lashing rain that forced over a thousand punters into the marquee, where a ripping god time was had by all, our Facebook page likes doubled, and everyone lived happily ever after.

You guys will be opening for Rise Against at Ramfest in Durban and Joburg next year. That must be a dream come true. What were your reactions when you found out?
We’d watched petitioning for us to open coming through from friends, fans and other bands for over three months prior to the announcement but when we finally heard confirmation of the slot, we felt … overwhelming redemption? We used to play a Rise Against cover in the early days so there’s a feeling of having come full circle to where we hoped and dreamed we’d be when we first started, and a nice resonance that it will happen in our decennary year.
We would also really just like to thank RAMfest for allowing us to play the Durban and JHB leg of this tour. They are doing such an insane job with bringing amazing acts to all our cities. We all just need to support these events so we can make them all happening again in the upcoming years.
What are you expecting for the show?
Another professional show from and well organized show. Huge sound, insane lighting, a passionate crowd, an intimate connection with our friends and long term supporters in the first few rows, a shared experience seeing some of our favourite bands on our home turf. To top it up this will be LOWPROFILE’s 10 year anniversary year so we are looking forward to do some awesome stuff for our friends and fans.
What can fans expect from your show?
We have to turn up the juice big time to perform with the likes of Rise Against, As I Lay Dying and Bring Me The Horizon and that’s what people can expect – a recharged Lowprofile, with an even bigger stage show, some new songs and some ones you can sing with us.
Where can fans catch you from now until Ramfest 2013?
We are in the planning of getting a tour happening to go up to JHB again in the next year and a few other shows locally, which is still in working progress. Otherwise we plan to start working on some new material and marketing our upcoming Music video which we have just finished shooting titled “Apathetic Means”.
