Over the past week a host of RVCA USA Pro Skateboarders visited local soil for the RVCA South Africa Tour. RVCA Marketing Manager and Tour Boss, Melissa Williams lists her behind the scenes highlights from the tour.
1. New Maboneng indoor skatepark
Very ghetto new skatepark put together by the One Love Expo Collective. There were like 400 kids there and they were all super pumped. They were super hyped to see the guys skating. Just an insane response and so much energy during the demo and the product toss at the end. The Americans were saying that kids in California don’t respond like that so it was great to see so much passion. When Greyson threw out that board they fought for that board for like 20 minutes before someone emerged with it from the mass of humanity.

2. Wits University
Handrail that Greyson Fletcher skated. He’s a transition skater and doesn’t really do rails, so this was one of the first real rails he’s ever skated. He ended up bailing on his back on the rail on one of the tries and snapped the rail in half. Unheard of! We went back the following day and fixed it with a wrench and some tape and he grinded the whole thing.

3. Greyson getting towed by a motorbike in Soweto
The crew skated the Soweto theatre. The Thrasher guys were saying it was one of the most insane sessions ever, which is quite something.

4. Kevin Long backyard pool session at an abandoned house near Durban
Was a pretty insane session. Two guys actually jumped the wall while were skating there. They had a gun and said we were trespassing on their property, we pretty much all thought we were going to die. And we didn’t. We ended up convincing he guys it was cool and they ended up watching us skate.

5. Kevin Long, Durban beachfront park
Whole gang of kids were there cheering and shouting and the Americans were so humbled by the experience wherever they went. Spent about a week in Durban and hit the beachfront park every morning.

6. Near the beach front in Durban
Bunch of kids playing there with spinning tops. Was such a cool experience, we just hung out there for ages and the kids showed the guys some tricks with their tops while the skaters showed them some stuff on their boards.

7. Aidan Campbell Mill Street skatepark demo
There were like 300 people there and there was a lot of energy and a great way to end the tour.
