Sunday 2nd February finally saw the perfect weather conditions hit Cape Town and the waiting period for the 2014 Red Bull King of the Air Kiteboarding event was over. LW Mag made sure to head down to Big Bay beach and join the 12 000 strong spectators to bring you the action.

The event was run as a unique “Flag Out” contest where coloured flags matching the various riders vests, in the 4 rider eliminations rounds, were lowered as the related rider was dropped out of the event. Throughout the day conditions picked up and the amount of height and airtime the Kiteboarders achieved was absolutely insane!

Competitors were judged on their creativity, style and height, which was made easier for the judges as each rider was fitted with Xensr technology which recorded airtime, speed, height and 3D motion of the athlete during each jump. French Kiteboarder, Tom Herbert set the highest jump of the day with an impressive 25.04 meters.

Andries Fourie, a Blouberg local made it into the final round of the day and posted the best South African finish in 4th place overall. Andries also posted the 2nd highest jump of the day at 23.37 meters. Dutch Kiteboarder, Kevin Langeree edged out his competitors in the final to take the overall and become the 2014 Red Bull King of the Air. Ruben Lenten finished in 2nd with Steven Akkersdijk in 3rd.

Blouberg is considered one of the best Kiteboarding spots in the world and we could see why, perfect wind and water condition with the backdrop of Cape Town is just unbeatable. The vibe on the beach was awesome all day long with spectators and fans from all over the world being entertained by the world class contest. Congrats to all involved on such a successful and epic event.
