Umhlanga Rocks will play host to the second leg of the Quiksliver Get Free Series taking place this weekend, 30 and 31 May. SA’s top pro surfers will make their way to bronze beach to compete in the Surfing South Africa PST event in the Open Men, U20 Junior Boys and U16 Boys divisions.
Over 90 surfers competed in the first leg of the series in Cape Town in March for their share of the R40k in prize money and prizes. Organisers are expecting similar numbers at the Umhlanga Rocks event. Beyrick de Vries, the local standout, will be a favourite to take the win in the Open Men’s division. Other favourites competing are Michael February and Dylan Lightfoot.
In the U20 Boys division it will be 18 year old Shane Sykes who will have all eyes on him. Matt McGillivray and Michael Monk are the other standout juniors. Adin Masencamp, Jake Elkington and Ethan Fletcher are the guys to look out for in the U16 Boys division.
Competition gets underway at 8am on Saturday. The final event of the Get Free Series will take place in Port Alfred on 29 and 30 August.
