The first of the three part Quiksilver Get Free Series took place at Kommetjie in Cape Town over the weekend seeing over 80 of SA’s top surfers take to the water. Top class surfing action was the order of the weekend in clean off-shore 3 foot conditions with Michael February claiming victory in the premier Open Mens division..
Looking comfortable in every heat and a clear standout, Michael February’s flowing surfing and manoeuvres proved too good for his competition. Mother nature came to the party in the latter heats seeing an exciting and close Open Mens final. Steven Sawyer put on a great display of surfing to finish in 2nd place while Davey Brand finished in 3rd and Llewellyn Whittaker in 4th. February’s win earned him R8 000, a Drift camera and valuable Pro Surf Tour points.
Matt McGillivray stole the show in the Under 20 Junior Boys division by taking the win in the dying moments of the final heat to pip Jerry Van Wyk into 2nd place. Max Elkington and Adin Masencamp surfed their hearts out to make the final and finished in 3rd and 4th respectively.
In the Under 16 Junior Boys division Adin Masencamp had a killer of a final and blew his competition out of the water with his opening ride scoring 9.25 points out of a possible 10 in the final. Joshe Faulker finished in 2nd, Jake Elkington in 3rd and Ethan Fletcher in 4th.
It was a great start to the Quiksilver get Free Series and has built up excitement for the next 2 stops – Umhalnga Rocks on 30 and 31 May, and Port Alfred on 29 and 30 August.
