Paul Ryan has become a force to be reckoned with at Ultimate X (27 and 28 Feb) finishing 2nd at last year’s BMX event. The UK rider will be back in SA competing at Ultimate X, enjoying some cold ones at The Night Harvest (6 March) and generally having a good time. We caught up with Paul and got his thought in the upcoming trip.

How amped are you to be heading out to South Africa?
I am very amped to be heading back to SA this month, don’t get me wrong I love being in the UK but there is only so much cold, wet and rain I can deal with at the moment [laughs]. Need to get back into some heat and get that vitamin D back in my life, so yes super amped.
You are coming out for both Ultimate X and The Night Harvest. How much do you know about these events and what are your thoughts on them?
I will be competing in the Ultimate X contest, that’s more of what I like to ride with it being more skatepark and street based, which has been super fun the past two years I’ve been to the event.
As for The Night Harvest contest, that’s more a dirt based contest which I don’t ride so am gonna be on the side enjoying the rider’s tearing it up while having a couple of cold beers.
One being a park event and the other a dirt event, which are you looking forward to most and why?
As I mentioned above the Ultimate X contest is more what I like to ride being more skatepark street based course as that’s what I ride all the time.
What are you goals for both Ultimate X?
Just to have fun and try to stay on my bike as much as I can [laughs].

What can fans expect from your riding style?
I haven’t seen the course layout just yet but am just gonna do my what I like to, mixing it up with the way I like to ride park and street.
You have a big bag of tricks, which new ones are you working on and will we see them in SA?
I’m not too sure what tricks will come out. I’ll just see how my riding is going on the day.
What are you hoping to experience while over here?
Same as the past years. Good times, good people, good food, good weather and of course good parties, boom!
Any words for the masses that will be out supporting the events and the athletes?
Shout out to all the masses that support Ultimate X and The Night Harvest for putting on such rad events which keep bringing me back every year. I can’t wait to be there again having a good time. See you soon Cape Town, South Africa!
