Over the past week South Africa was treated to the world’s biggest Action Sports show, Nitro Circus Live and it exceeded all expectations. Featuring the most insane Freestyle Motocross, BMX, Skate and contraption tricks the world has ever seen, the show attracted thousands of adrenaline hyped fans. So many in fact that the Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg shows were all sold out. Joburg topped the charts with a record breaking crowd of 35 000 screaming fans making Nitro Circus history with it being their biggest show ever! Nice on South Africa!

The show got underway with commentators, Andy Ziess and Bruce Robson, greeting the masses and making sure they heated up atmosphere by getting everyone ready for the non-stop, action packed show. Introductions started off with the Nitro Circus crew being called out one by one, Streetbike Tommy, Jolene van Vugt, Erik Roner, Wheelz, SA’s very own Nick De Wit, Crum, Special Greg, the Godfrey brothers, Bilko Williams, Adam Jones, James Foster, Clinton Moore, the list went on until the extremely talented crew of 40 world class athletes were announced. The athletes and crowd were now ready and revved up to go.

Durban experienced a Nitro Circus world first when Erik Roner back flipped off the Moses Mabhida arch and bass jumped into the stadium as his intro. Beaver Fleming landed a world first during the Joburg show by nailing the insane Double Finger Flip Backflip on a skateboard. Beaver has dubbed the trick the Fleming Flip Squared.

The Nitro Circus show was packed with jaw dropping action from start to finish. Some of our highlights of the shows were the insane FMX trains and Gigant-A-Ramp trains that had the crowns on their feet. The Nitro Circus bomb where every athlete in the show hit the jumps pulling off huge tricks was complete mayhem. Jolene van Vugt, the only female in Nitro Circus, rocked it with her Barbie car jump on the Gigant-A-Ramp and then went on to perfectly Backflip on her dirt bike, showing she has bigger balls than most guys we know.

It was a super cool and a very proud moment to have Nick De Wit, SA’s FMX legend, featured in the show and leading the crew in the SA vs USA segment. The Freestyle Motocross riders were mind blowing and threw down some of the biggest tricks in the industry, a lot of them being the first time ever landed on South African soil. Beau Bamburg and Jarryd Mcneil have some of the biggest whips in the game and proved it during the shows. Blake “Bilko” Williams threw down his signature 360 Nac Nac. Adam Jones’ Backflip Cliffhanger and Backflip Double Grab (only two riders in the world can do this trick) were nothing less than spectacular. Clinton Moore has the body varial down perfect and landed it cleanly in all 3 shows.

The Gigant-A-Ramp saw it fare share of awesome. Backflips, Double Backflips, Frontflips, Double Front Flips, Double Backflip Tailwhips, Backflip Supermans, Frontflip No-Handers, Backflip Triple Tailwhip, the list goes on and it had everyone in awe. Special Greg threw down his Special Flip. James Foster has his Triple Backflip dialled and landed it perfectly.

Without a doubt, one of the crowd favourites was the appearance of Wheelz on top of the Gigant-A-Ramp ready to drop in. Unfortunately Wheels over rotated his Frontflip in Cape Town and got spanked face first into the landing ramp. Wheelz then stepped up his game in Durban and went for the Double Frontflip getting the rotation perfect but getting the landing slightly off and he went down again. In Joburg Wheelz put his Frontflip down perfectly which saw FNB Stadium erupt into screams and cheers. It was that lump in your throat happiness moment for sure. Wheels didn’t just land it once though, in the final part of the show, the send off segment, Wheelz landed it perfectly again. Respect!

To have an Action Sports show of this caliber come to South Africa and be so well attended is incredibly awesome. Words cannot explain the emotions we and everyone who attended Nitro Circus Live are but they do ring true of excitement, happiness, awesomeness, epicness and more. After chatting to some of the athletes during the week, they all stated that this tour has been one of their best yet and they absolutely love South Africa. We can be pretty sure that Nitro Circus will come back to South African shores and after this experience, we cannot wait!
