Motocross video games are far and few between, especially good ones. MXGP – The Official Motocross Video Game has finally been released in South Africa and we jumped at the opportunity to get our hands on a copy and review it. The game is available for Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PS Vita and PC.

You now have the chance to bang bars with the world’s best in either of the Instant Race, Grand Prix, Championship or Career modes, and on the world circuit of 14 MX tracks across the globe. You will start off as an MX2 rider in career mode and race your way up to the premier MX1 class all while signing offers from different teams depending on your performance. The game includes 60 actual riders and 60 different bikes ranging from new teams to top teams like the Red Bull KTM Team, Monster Energy Yamaha, Rockstar Suzuki and more.

The riding assists adds to the game’s realism by offering rider weight options where you can control your riders stance separately to the bikes physics. Choose between joint brakes or have your rear and front brakes separate. Manual or semi-automatic transmission is also an option. Ruts form during the race but unfortunately don’t do much when it comes to placing the bike in the rut and opening the throttle. Although they do make a slight difference the bike isn’t held in the rut.

We found that moving from Easy to Realistic mode came very quickly but once racing in the realistic mode perfect lap after perfect lap is the name of the game otherwise the competition will pass you. It’s even harder to catch back up but not impossible which we liked. The game is highly addictive and is really good for a motocross game but it does have its weak points. Here is our list if hits and misses for MXGP.

Bikes sound different to each other and different pipes also make a difference

Choice of colour for certain gear accents helps with rider customisation
You have to be smooth to be fast

All in all MXGP – The Official Motocross Video Game has us hooked and we love the game. If you are a motocross rider, junkie or just a fan then this game is for you and you won’t be disappointed. We rate it 7 out of 10.
