Zigi Brodalka has become known for his insanely awesome photos taken of local Motocross and its star athletes. He has been working on Moto ZA – South African Motocross Photo Journal Volume 1 for quite some time now, a coffee table book featuring some of the best photos taken and some history of South African Motocross. The book has finally been released and it is better than anyone could have imagined. This is Zigi’s story of how Moto ZA came about.

“The idea of the book has been a long time in the making. I guess it all started with those American Motocross Illustrated Coffee Table books which Fox brought out in 2000. I have always been involved with Motocross and started taking pictures in the early days of 1999 with my first camera. At that time it was about enjoying racing, drinking beer and screaming for my favourite riders with a whole bunch of good mates all loving the sport of Motocross. As time went by I starting taking more pictures and sort of compared it to the work of Simon Cudby (international Motocross photographer). I always wondered how he could get the shots he did? Well for one it’s the eye and then equipment but he has been a great inspiration for me and as the years went on I started getting better and started believing in myself.

I came to a point in 2011 where I started contacting magazines like Off road and Adventure and wanted to hear if they would publish some of my shots. Terry Friend opened the door for me there so it started of with regional racing and the Cape Town Nationals. At the end of 2011 I had a bee in my bonnet and I wanted to cover the National Motocross. With no inkling of how or what, I manage to get myself to Sun City for the first Womza Nationals and ever since then I covered all the Nationals to date. More Magazines started publishing my work. I even had my first shot in Americas biggest Moto Magazine, Racer X.

After all this I started realizing that the magazines would use 5 shots at the most and that would be that after I would take up to 3000 shots at a National. I kept feeling that a lot of good shots were going to waste and I wanted to share them. The idea of the Coffee Table book became a realisation, and only when I heard that 12 Times SA Motocross Champion, Richard van der Westhuizen, was going to retire after the 2013 season I thought it would be a perfect time to capture some great history in a book form. Even in this digital age there is still nothing like a good printed Coffee Table book.

The actual project started about nine months ago. I spoke to Laren van der Westhuizen who does all the local race reports and the commentary at the Nationals. I knew he was the right guy for the narrative as he knows most of the riders and their careers. So between a lot of emails back and forth with screen shots to get wording right and spell checks, Shane Rutherford of Wetherd Designs came to the party and designed the final cover just to complete it with a striking finish.

So it has been a project of many. Also I need to mention Trevor Roux who helped me out with the trade mark of Moto ZA and Shaun Engler of Digital Vinyl getting me going in the vinyl side of things. Also Alvery Stokes with great deal of patience and encouragement for me and lastly but not least is the man who made this all possible Colin Sunkel, I might just add that getting funding for a project like this was really difficult especially in times like these but he saw himself in me from when he was a youngster and wanted to give me the same jump start I needed. To wrap it up the book took about 4 months to complete the other 5 months  hunting for funding. The fact is Laren and I believed in this project and even at points in time we thought “ah well this might not happen”, i actually refused to give up on this. I only realised a couple of days ago that there is now a part of South African Motocross captured in History.”
