The Interview:

You just got back from a killer surfing trip to Tahiti. How long where you there for?
Yeah was nuts! I was floating around paradise for 3 weeks.

How did the trip come about and what was your plan for the trip, did you achieve everything you wanted to?
I went over for the Billabong Trails, which gave an opportunity to qualify for the Billabong Pro Teahupoo. It was an invite only event so I was honoured to go. Then after this, the plan was to get the sickest photos and video footage I could get. I missed qualifying for the main event by one heat. Then the waves went flat in Tahiti but we ventured to an outer island in the last days of the trip and scored the mental right-hander.

Which part of Tahiti did you stay in and how many spots did you get to surf?
I stayed at the wave itself, Teahupoo is recognised as the most intense wave in the world. This was pretty much the only wave I surfed until we scored the other right-hander on the outer island.

There are some bombs featured in your video, which breaks were those filmed at?
The first few were from a small day at Teahupoo, unfortunately is doesn’t convey even a taste of what it’s like when the big swells march in, and then the other footage is from another island. The locals would kill me if I told you where it was.

Explain one of the best waves you surfed there?
Teahupoo is actually the best wave I have ever surfed. A few years back in 2011 I was blessed enough to be there for the biggest swell in history to ever hit Teahupoo. They called it the “Code Red Day”. Never seen and surfed waves like that in my life.

What part of the trip was your favourite and why?
Surfing the right-hander on the other island was the best part of the trip. I was cruising with some amazing local people who welcomed me into their crew. We had such good times with them. Barrels, good food, jolling and just living the dream.

Which other surfers joined you on the trip?
I went solo. Over there already were all the best surfers in the world for the event.

What did you get up to on your off days in Tahiti?
I did a lot of spear-fishing. Other than that we hiked up the mountain and swam in the fresh water pools high up in the hills and went deep sea fishing. Tahiti is paradise.

You are one of the Acer influences and using the new Acer Iconia A1 tablet. What to you think of the device and how does it help document your surfing career and trips?
The Iconia A1 tablet is so sick. The best thing about it is its size, making it super mobile so I can stuff it in my back-pack and whip it out when I want to take a photo, check the wave forecast or just scan what’s going on back home on Facebook. The tablet is also very durable and easy to use.

When and where are you planning on adventuring next?
I’m planning to be home for 2 months. Let me tell you, the comforts of home are most appreciated when you’ve been travelling solo. Even if it’s a beautiful place like Tahiti. I’m heading over to Ireland in December. It’s mid winter there at that time of the year and together with some of the biggest storms in the world come the biggest and most intimidating waves too. That’s what I’m chasing.
