Malossi Cup Scooter 101 Round 3 Race Report

Round 3 of the Malossi Cup Scooter 101 started on a very chilly and very overcast morning at Kyalami. After all the strange weather lately and the last 2 rounds being either super slippery or rainy we all thought we were going to have another slippery wet race. As the morning went on and the clouds didn’t move but we realised that it wasn’t going to rain and the track was amazingly tacky with awesome grip.

After qualifying it soon proved the days racing was going to be epic in stock and open classes as the top 5 riders were all separated by split seconds.

Stock class heat 1 started with some insane battling from the Jonway boys and the Malossi duo. Bumping of elbows and trying to find that one impossible line to pass ended with Louw coming in first and Shannon 2nd with Trevor losing his 3rd place position to Damian due to some engine problems.

Heat 1 Open class was just as intense with Louw, Brannigan and Aston fighting it out in the front. Louw and Brannigan had a really close race after Aston lost the front on the back straight and then looped his scooter out after trying get back into the race too fast. The race ended with Louw in 1st, Brannigan in 2nd and Jeremy Pincus in 3rd, all within the 44sec per lap time.

Heat 2 stock class was a mirror image of the first race were the battle continued and the gloves were back on between Louw and Shannon but Shannon had some help with Damian and it seemed to work out better for the Jonway boys when Damian found a great line past Louw and took the win with Louw in 2nd and Shannon in 3rd all within split seconds of each other!

Open class heat 2 was a chance for Brannigan to take it as he knew he had a chance now that Aston was starting from behind and he had slightly faster times than Louw. Thinking it was going to be easy was far from the truth, a fight it was all heat long. Louw and Bran fought all heat but on the second last lap Bran passed Louw and made it stick with Aston playing catch up all race he amazingly caught up to 3rd position.

With the stock class being as competitive as it always has been the crowds were going mental on the stands for heat 3. As in heat 1 and 2 it was a fight between Shannon, Louw and Damian. Nonstop passing made it a spectacular race to watch. With yet another photo finish the race ended with Louw taking it with Damian in 2nd and Shannon in 3rd.

Heat 3 of the open class started off with a hot first lap with the top 5 trying to hold their position and fight to get up front early. On the second lap Aston tried to take the inside line and out braked himself, in the process getting hooked onto Brannigan and holding back while riders passed. Louw had pulled a huge gap and it took Brannigan the entire race to catch Jeremy Pincus in 2nd place and on the last lap managed to pass him. It was an epic race to watch and the final results were 1st Louw, 2nd Brannigan and 3rd Jeremy.
