Leticia Bufoni South Africa Tour Interview

World renowned Red Bull skateboarder, Leticia Bufoni, visited South Africa over the last week, joined by friends Aldana Bertran (Argentina) and Brandon Valjalo (South Africa) skating spots around the country with some of our local skaters.
Notably hosting two workshops, aimed at female Skateboarding, at the Pimville Skate Park in Soweto with Island Gals and The Shred Skate Park in Cape Town with Skate Smiles Club.

While at the Soweto workshop, we had the opportunity to ask Leticia a few questions about her trip, the local skate scene and her plans for the future. Here’s what she had to say.

Interview with Leticia Bufoni in South Africa

Give us some insight into your trip to South Africa?
This trip was all about skating, getting to know the people here and of course supporting the girls.

What were your initial thoughts on the local skate scene?
I was really surprised with how many girls are skating in South Africa. I know the scene is growing but I didn’t know there was going to be that many girls. I’m super stoked to be here and to be able to meet them and skate with them.

Having met a few of our skaters, do you see potential in them and their skating?
For sure. There was a girl today (Johannesburg workshop at Pimville Skatepark) who won the best trick (Skivvy Gee). She’s really good and she’s got a good style, which is really hard to find.

What do you feel would be the biggest contributing factor to progressing and developing the sport in South Africa?
I feel like it needs to get more support, like more skate parks, more sponsors, more events. I think that will be the key to make this sport grow.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into skateboarding and ultimately reach a competitive level?
I’d say, just follow your dreams. Don’t let anyone say that you can’t do it. Just prove them wrong and never give up.

Which basic trick would you say new skaters should learn to set a good base foundation?
I feel like the foundation for skateboarding is definitely an Ollie. They got to learn an Ollie first and then everything else comes after.

What’s your take on competitive skateboarding at the moment and the introduction of the sport into the Olympics?
Man, it’s amazing that Skateboarding is finally in the Olympics, and since then the level of Skateboarding has gone crazy, it’s like next level. Especially for the girls, the girls are skating so good now days that it’s even hard to keep up.

What does it mean to you to see female skateboarding thriving around the world?
It’s amazing to see so many females Skateboarding. It’s what I wanted to see when I started skating, you know, there was not many girls skating back in the day and now having a lot of girls that can inspire, it’s amazing.

What future plans do you have for yourself within your skating career?
I want to keep skating as much as I can, keep inspiring more people to get into Skateboarding and keep spreading the good word.

After skating, what’s next for Letitia Bufoni?
I definitely want to focus in racing (motorsport) the next few years, but Skateboarding will always be my priority and passion, so I’m going to keep skating as much as I can.

What has been the highlight of your life?
It’s hard to pick one, it’s been an amazing journey. I think all my X Games medals definitely, and the first ever Street League that I won, are the biggest highlights of my life.
