South Africa’s Matthew McGillivray has officially qualified for the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour 2020 after he finished in equal 9th on the final day of the Vans World Cup of Surfing, event No. 2 of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.
McGillivray was placed 6th on the international QS ratings prior to this contest, and this result replaced one of his lowest counting results, cementing his place in the top ten that qualifies for the so-called Dream Tour.
McGillivray won Heat 2, Round 4 to advance to the Quarterfinals, where he was eventually eliminated by Ezekiel Lau and Jacob Wilcox.
“I just want to say thank you so much to everyone back home for the support, I got so many messages I still have to reply to, I didn’t realise how many people followed what was going on, and it has been amazing to experience the support. It’s been my biggest dream and to be able to achieve that, it’s hard to describe. It’s such an amazing experience to be here and how everything’s worked out, there’s so many good, happy emotions flying around.” said McGillivray.
