The Interview:
Tell us how your latest edit came about and why the name “Ice Cream”?
The edit came about via Steven and Red Bull SA. The name “Ice Cream” was decided upon because the concept we are introducing is so fresh and it gives you a brain freeze (what the film makers call it). Once you have successfully done something new and exciting it’s like when a kid gets an ice cream for the first time.
What was it like filming with Steven Michelsen?
Filming with Steven is always a great time. His creative ideas and chilled manner makes for quality filming.
Steven is known for his awesome surf edits and has now tried his hand at motocross. How do you think he pulled it off?
He pulled it off 100%. Totally different way of shooting MX with fresh angles and action packed clips.
What different aspects did Steven bring to filming compared to the usual guys that film motocross edits?
Action packed edits with new, fresh and exciting angles.
Which part of the final edit is your favourite and why?
At the 52 second mark when I jump over Steven and the cameras. I love the angle of the shot!
The edit was filmed at your home track, Zone 7 in Cape Town. What are the pro’s and con’s of the track?
We had the 2nd round of the MSA Nationals at Zone 7 last month and the track showed why there is no con’s of the track. It’s a fast track with flowing corners and big jumps. In winter, the track is absolutely prime. It has soft, loamy soil that gives you ultimate traction and delivers great racing.

You throw down some decent whips in the edit. How would you best explain how to whip a dirt bike?
Approach a jump at an angle so you can turn the bike off the jump and still hit your intended landing target. As you are coming into the jump lean your body and handlebars which should give you the whipping effect. You can extend the whip more by pulling it over more on the handlebars or leaning more off the bike. It should be a fluid motion with leaning and getting that gyro effect. Twisting the throttle is the best way to bring the bike back straight when you are about to land.
Your 2014 season has started off with some great results. What are your goals for the rest of the season and where do you see yourself finishing in the end?
My goals for 2014 is to get back the #1 plate in the MX2 WOMZA Championship and to fight for the MX2 SA Championship in the MSA series. With my training and riding going well, I feel that I have what it takes to contend for the SA titles.
What upcoming races are you looking forward to the most and why?
I am looking forward to racing at Springfield next week for the MSA series because we haven’t raced there in a few years and it should be good racing. Then in June, we head off to Teza in Richard’s Bay which I am really looking forward to. The track is one of the best in SA with lots of elevation changes and big jumps.
Any words for your competition leading into the upcoming races?
Good luck, train hard and let’s have some fast & safe racing!
