Hurley SA Junior Champs Final Day Wrap Up

It was a fine, fine day for a surfing contest down in JBay. The sun was shining down, the wind was puffing from the right direction, and the waves were stacked up to the horizon. Coming in at a solid three-feet, the conditions were perfect for the best junior surfers competing in the Hurley SA Junior Champs.

Spectators flocked down to the beach, and the provinces were hooting and whistling their support for the remaining team members and in a bid to win the Skullcandy Team Spirit award. Last year the award went to Southern KZN for their vocal support throughout the five days of that event.

The surfing performances were inspired. While this was a team event, there are still individual titles in every division, and as in every competitive sport, everyone wants to win.

Standing on the rocks and gathered on the sand, the teams carried on, in a bid for the Freedom Cup team trophy, won by Western Province last year.

Surfing at its best at the SA Junior Champs
Hot favourite U17 Girl surfer Crystal Hulett from St Francis Bay and representing EP was a shock elimination in the semifinals of this division. Crystal had two good waves under the belt, but was overtaken towards the end by Jade Mets from KZNC, who stole her way into second with an excellent set wave from way outside all the way through to the shorebreak. The heat was won by Anoush Zakarian from Boland.

The finals were action-packed and the waves continued to pulse until the last siren had sounded. As the competitors moved into the tent for the awards, the local surfers flocked out to surf a few of the cooking waves that they had been watching for the last five days.
