Another action packed day of surfing at the Lower Point in JBay for the second day of the Hurley SA Junior Champs. Small but ever so clean two to three-feet waves poured down the point from first light, and the competition kicked off at 7:30 sharp.
While there were many highlights throughout the day, two early morning performances worth noting were Chanelle Botha from Southern KZN totally dominating her U17 Girls heat for a convincing win, with Lauren Ridge in second.
Karl Steen from KZN Central was another surfer who punched above his weight in his heat, winning convincingly from Dylan Hendriks from EP. Karl, who surfs at the New Pier in Durban and who is known to be fearless when the waves get solid, surfed some long waves with multiple moves to get a very high heat total of 14.25 out of a possible 20 with a 7 point ride and a 7.25 to back it up.
Max Elkington, hailing from Hout Bay and representing WP, was another surfer who went for broke in his heat in the U13 Boys division heat 2. Max faced some stiff competition from Saxton Randall from KZN Central, with both surfers advancing directly into the next round.
Last year’s Surfer Of The Contest and U13 Champ, Kai Woolf from JBay and representing Eastern Province, was on point for her opening heat, totally destroying the competitors and leaving them in the dust. Her campaign for a third U13 title is looking solid, and all eyes will be on the best girl surfer to emerge from JBay.
The competition runs until Sunday 12th, and the forecast for the next few days looks promising. Tomorrow (Friday) morning looks like the best window for surf out of the whole 5-day event period, but a good swell sticks around all the way through to the end, but with the winds becoming light and variable to possibly light onshore towards the end of the period.
While the competitors are vying for individual titles as well as the Freedom Cup provincial trophy, there are many other awards to be handed out. Red Bull are giving away a prize for the Best Air and Oakley will be giving away a prize for the highest heat score. All Aboard Travel (www.all-aboard.co.za) will be giving one lucky surfer a flight to join a photo-shoot surf trip with Zigzag Surf Mag (www.zigzag.co.za) that will see them featured in one of the magazine’s photo editorials.
