We came across this video of Motocross rider Grant Frerichs killing it at the Smoking Pistons Supercross Track in the south of Joburg. We decided to catch up with Grant and get his thoughts on the track and some other things. Check out the video and interview here:
What are your thoughts on the Smoking Pistons Supercross Track?
The track is really awesome! I enjoy riding it because it is a nice change of pace in comparison to our usual MX tracks in JHB like dirt bronco. I think I love it so much because of the jumps. I’ve always loved jumping. The track is built really well as far as South African standards go but it could do with a rebuild and a few changes to try and keep it interesting for the riders.
What is your favourite part of the track?
My favourite part has to be the big (main) triple.
What changes would you make to the track?
I would try build a better timing section where you can do different rhythms in order to try go faster than the rest of the guys. At the moment everyone does the same thing on the track which tends to make it quite boring.
How big do your balls have to be to hit the small Step-up over to the small roller?
Well do you want to measure mine? Hahaha, the first time I hit it my balls were in my throat, the amount of adrenaline running through my body was unbelievable. As far as I know there are only 3 of us that jump that section.

What advice would you give someone wanting to ride the Supercross track for the first time?
Take it slow! You definitely can’t go out there thinking that you can jump a table top the size of the triple so you can hit it in your first ride. You have to get a feel for the amount of pop that the jumps give you and then work on clearing the jumps.
What part of the track do you think is the hardest?
The hardest part for me is clearing the triple in the middle of the track…because it’s out of a turn you have to get as much drive as possible and on the 250f it’s all she’s got to get over the knuckle on the landing.
Talk us through hitting the main triple for the first time?
The most important thing is to rather over jump than under jump. I have come short on it before and trust me it hurts. After you’re comfortable with jumping the double try give it a bit more to land between the jumps then when you’re ready make sure you’re in the right gear coming into the jump because you don’t want to have to change up on the take off. Lastly you have to blip the throttle on the take off to get the right height to get over the landing. If you tap off on the take off you will case it because the landing is so high. Before attempting to jump it make sure you are comfortable on your bike in the air and you know what you’re doing.

What goals do you have for your racing career in 2013?
2013 is a less serious year for me because of lack of sponsorship but you will still find me out there at as many races as I can be at just having fun and riding my bike because that is what I enjoy the most.
