Growing up in Kommetjie is such a paradise for a young surfer, and if you love your surfing it must be difficult not to get really good in such an environment really quickly. From Scaraborough beach all the way across to the Hoek in the corner at Noordhoek, there are waves of every kind pretty much, and growing up on those waves is going to allow for versatility. There are big wave spots like Kom and Crayfish and Sunset, there are the beachbreaks of Scarborough and Misty Cliffs, Witsands and Long Beach, and the big barrels of Noordhoek. There are the reefs like 365, Spot X and a few others, and then there are the temperamental waves like The Boiler and Boneyards.
Ford and York van Jaarsveldt are two such surfers who have excelled in these conditions, rapidly rising in the respective age groups and getting to the top of the pack in the competitive environment. In the U17 Boys division at the Billabong SA Junior Champs, Ford was a consistent performer, battling all the way through to the final with heat wins predominantly, and not second places. Four wins and the one 2nd place saw him in the final.
Ford finished 2nd, but reduced the disappointment of finishing runner-up in the U17 Boys’ for the second year running by successfully completing the best aerial manoeuvre and pocketing the cash in the winner-takes-all VonZipper Airshow.
