EFC’s first event of the year took place over the weekend. EFC 92 produced an exciting 12-fight MMA card headlined by the Middleweight Title Fight between Luke Michael and Pupanga Tresor.
The fight proved to be one of the most controversial contests in recent memory. After both fighters exchanged on the feet, Tresor found himself in top control and began raining down ground and pound. Referee Ferdi Basson perceived several to have landed behind Michael’s head and signaled the fight to be over before changing his hands to a ‘time-out’ gesture.
The initial waving-off confused the crowd, corners and fighters who thought that Tresor had won gold. Basson then deducted a point from Tresor and restarted the fight. Michael then took top control, bringing down some heavy blows and forced the referee stoppage. Many are calling for an immediate rematch, the granting of which remains to be seen.
