For what most people thought was not the most exciting fight card, EFC 34 produced some of the most exciting MMA fights of the year. A Heavyweight stand up trade off and two top class Title fights had Mixed Martial Arts fans on the edge. Here’s our breakdown from fight night.
Fight 1: Welteweight – Tyron Bester vs Lyle Karam
Breakdown: Bester took the fight to the ground early. Karam got into top position and woked on Bester to finish the fight.
Winner: Lyle Karam.
By way of: Guillotine Choke.
Time: 1:20 into round 1.
Fight 2: Welterweight – Heinrich Potgieter vs Sydney Mokgolo
Breakdown: A great battle in round 1 with both fighters landing strikes on the ground. Potgieter got Mokgolo’s back and tried with a Rear Naked Choke but Mokgolo got out. In round 2 Mokgolo went in with the combos but Potgieter took it to the ground, got top mount and landed some heavy elbows. Potgieter then went for the submission.
Winner: Heinrich Potgieter.

Time: 1:32 into round 2.
Fight 3: Featherweight – Sindile Manengela vs Mthibisi Buthelezi
Breakdown: A close battle through the first 2 round with great strikes from both fighters. In the 3rd Buthelezi took control of the fight and unleashed on Manengela.
Winner: Mthibisi Buthelezi.

Time: 1:40 into round 3.
Fight 4: Middleweight – Warren Allison vs Cameron Meintjies
Breakdown: An all round grappling game that almost went the distance. Allison controlled the fight from top position on the ground.
Winner: Warren Allison.

Fight 5: Bantamweight – Marino Cutendana vs Sibulele Swekile
Breakdown: Cutendana closed the gap immediately and unleashed on Swekile finishing the fight early.
Winner: Marino Cutendana.

Time: 0:33 into round 1.
Fight 6: Bantamweight – Oumpie Sebeko vs Lourens Botes
Breakdown: This fight went the distance with Sebeko owning the stand up and hurting Botes with on point strikes. When Botes got the takedowns, which he did in all 3 rounds, he controlled the fight. The fight went to the judges.
Winner: Oumpie Sebeko.

Fight 7 Featherweight – Hanru Botha vs Nelson Feiteira
Breakdown: A huge stand up exchange before going to the ground briefly. Back standing, Botha ended the fight early.
Winner: Hanru Botha.
By way of: KO.
Time: 1:14 into round 1.
Fight 8: Featherweight – Tumisang Madiba vs Pierre Botha
Breakdown: Madiba went in landing big leg kicks and avoiding Botha’s takedown attempts. Botha got the takedown and got into to position before the fight stood back up. Botha then slammed Madiba to the ground but out of nowhere Madiba got in the submission and finished the fight.
Winner: Tumisang Madiba.

Time: 1:33 into round 1.
Fight 9: Light Heavyweight – Pete Motaung vs Champion Dulcha
Breakdown: Dulcha went straight for the takedown and tried with an Armbar. Motaung got out and got into top position before the ref stood the fight back up. In the clinch Dulcha flipped Mataung to the ground and tries with another Armbar, with success this time.
Winner: Champion Dulcha.

Time: 3:51 into round 1.
Fight 10: Heavyweight – Andrew van Zyl vs Vandam Mbuyi
Breakdown: It’s not often you get to see Heavyweights standing and trading but that’s what happened in this fight. Trade for heavy trade that has the crown on their feet screaming for more. In the 2nd round Van Zyl took Mbuyi’s back and landed heavy strikes.
Winner: Andrew van Zyl.

Time: 3:10 into round 2.
Fight 11: Bantamweight Title – Demarte Pena vs Francois Groenewald
Breakdown: Probably one of the most exciting fights we’ve seen from Pena. He stood and traded throughout the fight breaking Groenewald down round by round. On the Ground Groenewald was strong and tried with submission after subbmission but Pena was stronger and got out each time. Pena wanted the fight standing and controlled it from there seeing the ref stop the abuse in the 4th round. Pena won his 10 straight fight and is still the EFC Bantamweight Champion.
Winner: Demarte Pena.

Time: 4:34 into round 4.
Fight 12: Lightweight Title -Leon Mynhardt vs Sibusiso Mdoko
Breakdown: Mynhardt was a man on a mission and looked better than ever. He controlled the fight from the beginning landing strike after strike and heavy gnp when the fight went to ground. Mdoko did well to hold on for as long as he did. In the 3rd Mdoko dived for the takedown unsuccessfully seeing Mynhardt take advantage and finish the fight by taking Mdoko’s back. Mynhardt is still the reigning EFC Lightweight Champion.
Winner: Leon Mynhardt.
