Deity’s Muse, a band that has been rocking the SA music scene for 11 years now. The current line-up of the band have been together for the past 3 years and 2012 has been one damn good year for them. The band have finished off their year with a banging trip to Los Angeles where they played two shows, one being at the famous Viper Room. They then moved on to London and Berlin. We catch up with the band and chat to them about their overseas adventures.

Wayne Boucher – Guitar, lead vocals.
Sashan Pillay – Drums.
Alvin Boucher – Bass, backing vocals.
How did the bend get started?
Many years ago while I was working in CD store in my hometown, Alberton. It took a few line-up changes to get where we are today, but I can state proudly that we’ve definitely got the most solid and cohesive line-up right now than we’ve ever had before. 2012 has been a massive year for us.
Tell us how your trip to Los Angeles came about?
We sent our song, “I’m The Observer” to a rock label in Los Angeles. They loved the track and started planning a showcase tour to California for us. Somehow we happened to throw shows in Berlin and London into the mix as well. We’d like to thank our management for all the hard work in getting the tour off the ground.

How long were you there for and how many gigs did you play?
We played two shows (including The Viper Room) in California during our 2 weeks there. A lot of our time was spent networking and meeting producers and making friends with other bands there. We spent two days in London and played one show at The 100 Club. We were in Berlin for 1 day and played a show that same evening at a really cool club called Dunckerclub.
What venues where your favourite and why?
The Viper Room and The 100 Club. Because so many musical icons have performed on those two stages. Both these venues are considered to be institutions in the global rock scene. Other than their stellar reputations, the sound these two clubs possess is just exemplary. And you know you’ll always play to a relatively big crowd, no matter what night it is. Though we were very lucky to play both of these venues on a Friday night.
How did the American crowd react to you music?
Very well, actually. We flogged tons of CDs to the American crowds after each show. We managed to hang out with plenty of the patrons afterwards. We definitely made an impression and lasting relationships.
Tell us about some of the crazy and new stuff you guys experienced over there?
In L.A. we met and had drinks with Nick Oliveri from Queens of The Stone Age. We also managed to see a major cliche, a bouncy hydraulic car driven by a latino gentleman.
Did you pick up an American groupies?
No. But we did pick up some weight though. There’s various take away joints on every street corner in L.A. We ate like pigs.
What’s next for Deitys Muse?
We’re currently writing songs for our next album, which thankfully we’ve secured a North American distribution deal for. With all the work on this project we’ll be taking a break from gigging for a while. However, you can catch us live on the main stage at RAMfest JHB on Sat, 16 March.
