The December Streets have recently released their new album “This Is” and we caught up with Drummer Corneil Clasen to chat about the band and the album.

You have just released your debut album “This Is”. Tell us about the album and where the name for the album came from?
It was quite a process getting to come up with a name for the album. Someone just came up with the name as a joke, but it stuck from thereon and it can be interpreted in many ways, but it resembles what we can offer, almost like “This Is” it, like it or not, but rather do…
What can fans expect from your debut album?
Dancing. Some more dancing. And without much effort probably a bit more dancing. Combine with good production, easy listening melodies and a lot of love.
What song on the album is your favourite and why?
For me personally it is difficult, but ‘Who needs shoes’, ‘Thief’ and ‘Coming Home’ stands out. ‘Thief’ is a bit of a different track on the album, something a tad more progressive and was a blast recording.

Which song do you think is going to get fans screaming for more?
So far ‘So Fine’ is doing pretty well on 5FM, but I expect good things from ‘Coming Home’.
How long did you spend recording this album?
From the first day in studio till we had the final Master in our hands was around 2 months. We spent about a month tracking and a month mixing and mastering and adding some changes etc.
Are there any messages in any of the song that you are trying to get across?
In general we are not trying to give much social comment, or political opinions on anything, there is enough bands and politicians (or mixture thereof) out there to cover that ground. We write music that we enjoy, music we can listen to and that we can see people enjoying. That is pretty much the message…
Where do you see the album going?
We have really put a lot of effort into this, and we really belief in ‘This Is’, so hopefully we can get some international exposure from this and explore new territories if possible.
Who would you say is the quiet one out of the group and who is the party animal?
Quiet one is probably Gidoen (Bassist) and party animal will have to be Tristan. (Why do you think I am answering this?)
Do you guys ever get irritated with each other? What’s your remedy?
All the time. That’s why we have girlfriends. Haha, not really, you get in each other’s hair when on the road and touring, but nothing a good show can’t remedy.
Where can fans catch you live for the remainder of this year?
We are playing with ThePlastics for some of their album launch shows in PTA and JHB, some Tanz shows, and also heading down to Durban again in December. Check out our Facebook page to stay up to date.
