When it comes to Wakeskating, Darren “Two Step” Turner is making his mark in the industry. Darren put together an awesome edit of himself killing it at Stokecity Wakepark. Check it out and see what he had to say to us about it:
You have just dropped your first Wakeskating edit. How long have you been collecting the footage to put it together?
It hasn’t been that long actually. I started using my GoPro quite frequently last month, so I got some cool shots with that and gathered footage that we took a while back that I forgot about. So I would say, a month maybe.
What is your favourite part of the edit?
I would say the Backside Big Spin off the rail (1min 15sec), it definitely came out the best.
Filmed at StokeCity Wakepark. Explain your perfect run around Stoke City?
It’s pretty difficult to say, but maybe adding some flip tricks into a run would be sick but because the format of how the contests are run, you don’t have any pick-up’s/no falls allowed. So you have 2 runs and the best run out of the 2 will count obviously. Having this format applies a lot of pressure, as Wakeskating is difficult to get super consistent so we end up falling on basic tricks sometimes and you can’t get to the bigger tricks. This format applies for IWWF, and running that format here, it will prepare us for the next world champs.
What is your favourite obstacle at Stoke City?
Definitely the incline rail also known as the wedge. All the local Wakeskaters have the sickest sessions on it, it’s also nice for beginner Wakeskaters as well. I’m Seeing lots of guys learning new stuff off it which is rad to see.
Which was the hardest trick to land in this edit?
The Switch 3-Shuv took a few tries. The Back Big off the rail also took me a lot longer than usual.
What new tricks are you working on at the moment?
I’m still trying to get my Kickflips consistent but I have been getting close to Switch Back Bigspins. I have been trying Varial Flips every now and then.
With the winter season upon us, how often are you going to get to ride in the off season?
Well I’m hoping often. I’m trying to head overseas again from June and onwards, so holding thumbs for that.
What is the best way to practice in the off season?
Being a Wakeskater, getting a skateboard deck and jumping on the trampoline with it helps a lot with board control. And also just normal skateboarding is also a good way to keep the muscle memory going.
How did you get into Wakeskating and how long have you been doing it for?
I went to StokeCity which was called Base 3 back then, and joined a friend for his birthday back in 2008. I saw Wakeskating for the first time then and the bug bit hard. I started going to the cable every weekend in 2009 and bought my first Wakeskate in April that year and then met Matti Buys who has taught me a lot about the sport and helped me progress. The following weekend I was persuaded to enter a contest, my aim was to land a shuv. It didn’t happen. So I started riding hard as soon as I was out of school, unfortunately I stayed quite some distance away from the cable and having super busy parents, the cable wasn’t easily accessible for me during week days. I’ve been riding for over 3 years now.

What are your goals in the sport?
I’m not really a huge fan when it comes to contests, so I don’t really have winning as one of my goals. I just thrive on having all the Wakeskaters in one place and just shredding together, there is nothing that can replace such a feeling. I just want to progress as a Wakeskater and just grow the sport however and where ever I can.
