Meet one of the most influential BMX riders of all time, Daniel Dhers
This is your first time coming to South Africa. What are your expectations and what are you hoping to experience?
Yeah man, it’s my first time and I can’t wait to be there! I’ve been looking for an excuse to go for a while and this is the perfect one. I really want to experience the culture and see what’s there. It’s going to be awesome.

How much do you know about Ultimate X and what are your thoughts on the event?
I heard about the event too late last year to be able to make it but I made sure I was able to come this year. I heard it’s just a good time with good people and a good course, which is my perfect combination.

You have a stack of achievements under your belt, what are some of your highlights of your career?
As far as accomplishments go, I think the X Games Gold Medals, Dew Cups and NORA Cup are the most notorious.

What does the sport of BMX mean to you?
It’s a lifestyle, a way of life. I’ve been riding for 18 years and it has been an amazing ride and experience to be a part of something so unique.

What are your goals for Ultimate X?
Overall have a good time, I’m in the middle of a bunch of stuff so I’m trying to ride as much as I can and be prepared to compete, so we’ll see how we do.

What goes through your mind when you’re riding and competing?
For the most part I’m just paying attention to what I’m doing. I think the hardest part about competition is the moments leading up to it and if you don’t know how to handle it, it can control you.

Do you know any of the other competitors and if so, who do you think will be your main competition?
I think most guys have a big chance at Ultimate X, the best of the best are going and it would be unfair to mention just a few guys because everyone has been killing it lately.

What can fans expect from you and your riding style at Ultimate X?
Just some good old classic Dhers style [laughs]. I’m pretty happy with my riding right now so we’ll see what’s at the course and what can we do different.

What style of course suits you best and what features are your favourite to ride?
My type of course is a big, intricate, scary course but unfortunately they haven’t been around since Dew Tour used to build them. I think blind gaps and step downs separate the men from the boys and brings out the best of the best. As for tricks I might bring some 720 variations and other stuff.

What will a win at Ultimate X mean to you?
I think it would be awesome. I never competed in the continent of Africa so it would be my first win.

Any words for your fans that will be out supporting you?
Come say hi and let’s hang out! I’m down to meet people and fans in Cape Town!
