BMX heavyweight, Courage Adams recently made another trip to the African continent, but this time to South Africa and the City of Johannesburg. While connecting with local riders and hitting some of the best spots in Jozi, we caught up with Adams to ask a few questions.
Watch the newly released short film followed by the interview below…
Tell us about your experience of South Africa?
I would really like to spend more time here and experience more of the vibes and lifestyle. I had a great time, and I can’t wait to be back.
Give us some insight into the reason for your trip?
I was in Cape Town for a Vans project that will be out around February. We also came to Johannesburg to film a Red Bull experience project, came to hang out and see what the city is like, what’s it’s about and the vibes.
How old were you when you moved to Spain from Nigeria?
I was around 8 years old.
Have you ever been back to visit you own country?
Yes. The first time took like 10 years to go back. Then I went for the Encouraged project and that was awesome. It was one of my best experiences because I went with my bike and my bike is a part of me. I can say that me and Red Bull are planning something big, I don’t know when it’s going to happen but hopefully soon.

What’s the BMX scene like in Nigeria?
It’s quite different but it’s really good. The riders have a lot of energy and they’re not scared of anything. I think as soon as they have a good opportunity, like having a skate park and somewhere to practice, they’re going to go really big. They need more support.
How do you feel Street BMX has evolved over recent years?
It’s changed a lot. It’s completely different from back in the day. I think it is something positive because kids can really get into it and there are more options to do tricks and find your own style. There are more opportunities.
When it comes to learning new tricks, what goes into the process?
Sometimes you watch other people, sometimes it just comes to you and your mind, and sometimes riding when trying to do something and you figure out another thing.
Which one of your podium finishes stands out the most and why?
It would have to be my 2nd place finish at Simple Session last year, one of the biggest contests in Europe. It was a really good experience.
Which one contest have you not competed at that you want to compete at?
I’d really like to do more X Games because that’s like the highest level in Action Sports.
What’s next for Courage Adams?
I’ve been really focused on the Vans project. I’m going to take a rest, I’ve been working super hard this year (2021). Coming here has been so so good, so maybe I come back just for vacation.
