Liquid Force, Mystic Boarding Wakeboarding pro, Candice Bacon recently ventured up to Joburg from her home town of cape Town to film a kicker edit at the StokeCity Wakepark in Midrand. Candice stuck a variety of steezy tricks off the kicker which goes to show why she is one of SA’s top riders. We caught up with Candice and chatted to her about the edit, Wakeparks and her recently celebrated birthday. Check out the video and the interview below:
When were you up in JHB at the StokeCity Wakepark filming this kicker edit?
First week of May.
What is your favourite part of the edit?
That beautifully over-rotated Frontroll.
How many times did you crash during the filming?
During the actual filming I got lucky and landed most of my tricks first time but the riding in between I took quite a few falls because I had to get use to the kicker as its quite different from the one at home.
What trick kept haunting you and putting you face first into the water?
Definitely Heel 5, I kept landing it and popping the handle, most frustrating.
How much different is StokeCity Wakepark compared to your local BlueRock cable in Cape Town?
They’re both so different in so many ways, good and bad. One thing that’s really sick about StokeCity is how easy it is to get back to the dock, you simply pop off your bindings, swim a few meters to shore and then it’s a quick walk. Another really sick thing about StokeCity is the vibe, there’s a lot more joking around and having fun and you don’t even have to be riding to have a good time. Everyone there is so sick!
Which wakepark do you prefer?
I don’t think it’s safe for me to answer this question. All I’m saying is they both really great wakeparks and I’m just happy to get to ride.
What do you think could be added to both cable park to make them better?
A special area dedicated to Candice… Jokes. They both seem to be doing fine as they are.
How often will you be riding during the winter months?
BlueRock is unfortunately closing for quite some time in winter, so unless I get my hands on a boat, not too often.
You celebrated your birthday this past weekend. What did you get up to and just how out of hand did it get?
Together with a friend of mine, we hosted “Retro Olympics”. It’s basically a bunch of okes running around all brightly coloured, feeling brave and outgoing, doing things they’ll probably regret the next day and celebrating my coming of age. Let’s just leave it at that.
