The Kimberly Diamond Cup skateboarding world championships are around the corner which saw the KDC Boogaloos Grand Slam contest head to Durban this past weekend to the Wavehouse Skatepark in the Gateway Mall. Skaters competed for the wild card entry into the Amateur Street Skating comp taking place at the KDC as well as their share of the R50 000 prize purse.
Even Dlamini Dlamini and Jean-Marc Johannes flew up from Cape Town to take part in the contest and compete against Durban’s head skaters, GVB, Khule Ngubane, Jean Gerber, Braxton Haine and 7 other top class skaters.
In the beginner division it was Suhail Kader that took the win over 2nd place Thaziq Makuyl and 3rd place Siba Booi with his Front Boardslides down the A Frame that won the judges over and were flawless.
The All Cities qualifiers were off the hook. The “Scumbags” consisting of Braxton Haine, Dlamini Dlamini, Jean-Marc Johannes and Khule Ngubane put on one hell of a show that had the crowds screaming for more. Landing tricks like a Nollie Crooks down the A Frame by Khule, a Switch Bigspin Late Flip by Jean-Marc and a Back Noseblunt down the rail by Dlamini saw them take the win and the R10 000 cash prize.
The advanced contest saw Khule Ngubane take the win over Braxton Haine in 2nd and Jean-Mark Johannes in 3rd, scoring him the wild card entry into the KDC and the R10 000 1stprize. Dlamini Dlamini won the Skater’s Choice award and took home R1500. Khule’s Nollie Big Heel Back Lipslide earned him the Best Trick award and a cool R2500.
Thanks to all the sponsors for making this event possible: Kimberley Diamond Cup, Kumba Iron Ore, Monster Energy, Northern Cape Tourism Authority, Etnies, Boogaloos, Skullcandy, Volcom and Converse.
