Having successfully defended her Street Lines Skate Tournament for the third time at the recent 2023 competition, we catch up with winner Boipelo Awuah to get her thoughts on the event, the progression of female skateboarding in South Africa and more…
What does the sport of Skateboarding mean to you?
Skateboarding to me is my entire life. It has so much value in my life and without it I would feel incomplete.
What have been some of the highlights of your career?
Some highlights has been seeing the growth of the SA female skate scene and the progression as a whole. Another highlight has been being able to travel the world and create very dope memories.
How would you best sum up your experience at Street Lines this year?
The atmosphere at the Street Lines competition is always one I admire the most. Everyone looks forward to the event. The stoke for everyone and being able to skate and chill with all the skaters was amazing.
What does it mean to you to have won the event for the third time in a row?
Winning the event for the third time in a row feels great because it lets me know that my progress is not stagnant and it also gives me the opportunity and platform to not only push myself but other SA female skaters as well.
What did you think the Women’s division this year?
The ladies progression was absolutely amazing to watch.
Which skaters impressed you the most and why?
Caitey Karagiannidis impressed me a lot, seeing her progress from the previous Street Lines competition and this year’s competition was really cool.
Watching Thalente Biyela skate is also always a pleasure to watch.
What do you feel the Street Lines Skate Tournament does for the sport of Skateboarding in South Africa?
The competition really helps grow the sport in a huge way by bringing all the skaters to one environment.
What changes or additions would you like to see added to the event in the future?
I would definitely love to see more female skaters at the event and just more people, and for it to keep on growing.
For anyone wanting to get into skateboarding, what advice would you offer them?
Start skateboarding because you love it and don’t try and copy what others do. Skating is a way for you to express your individual self.
What’s next for Boipelo and where would you like to see you skating career take you?
Definitely more international competitions. I would love to see myself do well in those competitions and I believe I will. I would love to be able to skate for as long as possible and to create a legacy for myself through the sport and helping others, and to fulfil my purpose on earth, whatever God has for me to do on earth.
