Last night, 23rd January 2013, saw the fine example of the influence Monster Energy, Unit and LW Mag have on BMX freestyle and action sports in general. Deciding to throw a little ‘last minute’ Best Trick competition at the Jozi X Bag Jump, with only 2 days of organizing and marketing the event. Even with the short notice, a few Tweets and Facebook posts, they managed to get roughly 30 riders to rock up for a rad big air session. Besides all the riders that pulled in, there was a great turn out of people that came to support, adding to the nights experience.
Once the comp got underway the riders pulled out all the stops and were killing it with huge combo flips, spins and body varials. After the qualifying runs were done and dusted it all went down in the finals which saw Shawn Van Zyl grab 3rd place with huge spin variations, body varials, Backflip combo attempts and a closely landed Backflip Superman Seatgrab.
2nd place went to Freestyle Motocross rider Grant Lucas who lay down some insane Backflip combos including a Dead Body Backflip, Striper Backflip, Cordova Backflip and a Cliffhanger Backflip. Unfortunately he didn’t land any of them perfectly but he did get damn close on a few attempts.
Rico Ribeiro stayed consistent all night long and landed huge dialed tricks like his extended Seatgrab Indian Air, Corked 360’s and 720’s and perfect Frontflips which saw him take the win and walk away with a Monster Energy and Unit hamper.
The BMX Bag Jump Best Trick Comp was a huge success and you can be sure to see a few more of these events going down in the near future. A big shout out goes to Monster Energy and Unit for making the event happen and creating the awesome vibe. Lastly to Jozi X for allowing the event to take place at their kick ass venue and for using their Bag Jump, check them out on Facebook.
