Born and bred on the solid barrels of Kalk Bay Reef, Jordy Maree is the latest prodigy child of Cape Town surfing. The 16-year-old goofy footer has turned heads of late with his progressive approach to the fabled discipline.
When Jordy is not surfing, he can often be found skating around his new hometown of Kommetjie and ducking his head into shaping bays such as DVG. His newly found passion for shaping no doubt will influence his outlook on wave riding as he discovers the in’s and out’s of the why surfboards work.
A turning point in his surfing career may have happened on a recent trip to Kandui in the Mentawais with his long time coach and fellow shredder Chris Bond. The waves were by far the most challenging that he has ever faced and he tackled them with maturity beyond his years in the water.
Looking back at the recent contest results of Jordy is like reading a playbook from an athlete such as Greg Emslie with numerous Springbok Caps, a plethora of Billabong Junior Series wins and most recently he won the Kalk Bay Shootout and the Tigers Milk Classic on the SAME DAY! When you ask him about his victories, there is no ego or chauvinism in his eyes or answers, there is simply a humble response like, “I did good… but my wave selection could have been better.” An intrinsic positive criticism that many older athletes could learn from.
If you were a betting man, you would put high stakes on Jordy to be one of the next South African powerhouses in the sport but if you are not, you may just say that this kid rips, and damn, does he rip hard. One thing is for certain, if you want to find him, the best place to look would be on the podium at the next junior surfing contest.
