In this quick series we’re going to introduce you to a selection of top South African junior surfers who are set to compete in the Billabong Junior Series Grand Finale at Seal Point in Cape St Francis. The event is set to take place over the long weekend of 25 – 27 September.
Surfer Profile No4 – Gina Smith
The Smith family has surfing in their blood. It comes from living in JBay, with the perfection of Supertubes, Lower Point, Magnatubes and other waves as their back yard.
Oldest sister Emma has had her fair share of wins and titles, victories, and team inclusions, and her career is still flourishing, being one of the top female surfers in the country.
Youngest sibling Zoe is starting to shine through with her strong backhand attack and as her surfing matures she will come into her own in the junior divisions.
Middle sister, Gina Smith is the surfer in the thick of the action at the moment. She is a powerful goofy footer, who is equally adept at surfing the rights of JBay and the environs, or the left-handers on the beaches of Port Elizabeth or Cape Town, wherever the domestic competitive circuit takes her.
Billabong Junior Series Venue
Gina has a fluid style, and has undergone many hours of coaching at the contest venue of Seal Point under the watchful eyes of her coach Graeme Hynes. She has the wave’s idiosyncrasies covered and is going to know which waves to catch to maximize scoring potential. Despite being one of the funnest waves around and an absolute dream to run an event at, Seal Point can be quite tricky, especially if there is a mixed-direction swell. Some waves that look good might close-out and others that look like they might run down the point can fade further up, making big scores difficult.
