Billabong Junior Series Surfer Profile Dylan Lightfoot

In this quick series we’re going to introduce you to a selection of top South African junior surfers who are set to compete in the Billabong Junior Series Grand Finale at Seal Point in Cape St Francis. The event is set to take place over the long weekend of 25 – 27 September.

Surfer Profile No1 – Dylan Lightfoot

Hailing from Jeffreys Bay, Dylan has a strong pedigree with a number of big results behind his name already. He was the favourite to win the first event in the series that took place at Magnatubes in JBay in July, but was eventually beaten by international invitee Eithan Osborne from Ventura, California.

Dylan is always a standout at right-hand point-breaks, like Seal Point, seen as he grew up in JBay. He also won the 2014 JBU Supertrial presented by RVCA and was awarded a wildcard slot into the JBay Open Championship Tour event. He came up against Kelly Slater in this event, giving him valuable experience in his quest to become a successful professional surfer.

Dylan is a natural-footed surfer (left foot forward) and has a strong forehand approach. His surfing is fast and dynamic and suited to the walls of Seal Point. He has also spent many hours training and being coached here, and knows the wave like the back of his hand in all conditions.

One of the most important components of competitive surfing is the Big Match Temperament. This is the ability to keep a cool head in stressful and strenuous situations, and the ability to calm the body down when everything is working over time. Dylan is fit and strong, and is totally relaxed and calm while competing. He waits for the right waves, he doesn’t stress, and he rarely makes any tactical mistakes in his game. He is sure to be one of the top surfers in the U20 Pro division.
