SA’s best junior surfers went for broke in small and onshore waves at the final stop of the 2014 Billabong Junior Series. The unfavourable conditions didn’t stop the exciting surfing action that went down at Seal Point, Cape St Francis over the weekend.
York van Jaarsvelt took the win from Tide Lee Ireland in the U12 Boys division, while Kirsty McGillivray outpointed Ann Jellema-Butler in the U14 Girls division. The U14 Boys division was fiercely contested but it was Sebastian Williams to claimed the win from Koby Oberholzer.
Ruth Armstrong beat Crystal Hulett in the U16 Girls division while Adin Masencamp took home the U16 Boys division win from Alex van Rijswick.
In the Pro Junior Women’s final it was sisters Emma Smith and Gina Smith who claimed 1st and 2nd respectively. Teal Hogg finished in 3rd and Crystal Hulett in 4th.
An action packed affair went down in the Pro Junior Men’s heats. The highly contestable high-tide conditions saw 4 surfers going for broke. Fatigued after his U16 final, Adin Masencamp finished in 4th. Josh Smit placed 3rd failing to find connecting waves. Dylan Lightfoot was surfing dynamic and fast but it wasn’t enough and he had to settle for 2nd. Shane Sykes was on form and dominated the final earning the highest heat score of the event and taking home the win.
