Billabong Junior Series Event 1 Mossel Bay Results

The first event of the 2014 Billabong Junior Surfing Series presented by BOS took place in good conditions in Mossel Bay at Outer Pool from the 25th April to 27th April. As the sun beat down, crowds enjoyed a weekend of top class surfing.

Day 1 Highlights Video:

The biggest waves of the event arrived as the U12 Boys took to the water for their final seeing the jetski safety crew on standby. The heat ran without any problems and none of the young surfers needed to call for assistance. Tide-Lee Ireland impressed all by catching the biggest waves and took the overall win. York van Jaarsveld finished in 2nd and Christian Venter in 3rd.

In the U14 Girls final the onshore breeze showed up resulting in some solid sets pouring through. Sophie Bell took the win comfortably with her top form performance ahead of Gabriella Lailvaux in 2nd and Nina Harmse in 3rd.

A close battle took place in the U16 Boys final in chunky conditions but it was Max Elkington who came out on top. Koby Oberholzer had to settle for 2nd and Julian Zens 3rd.

Michelle Verreyne took the win in the U16 Girls final using her experience at Outer Pool and defeated Danica Stockigt who finished in 2nd. Ruth Armstrong finished in 3rd.

Matt McGillivray was the favourite to win the U18 Boys division and he did not disappoint. A polished performance and a huge forehand air put him in 1st place ahead of Benji Brand and Richard Kidd in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Matt stated that he was super stoked to land the high scoring air move and that he had a great time at Mossel Bay during the contest.

The U18 Girls division was dominated by Chanelle Botha throughout the final day as she took the win in the final heat. Jade Story finished in 2nd and Britney Linder in 3rd.

Waves were still pouring through as the U20 ASP Pro Junior Women took to the water. From the get go Emma Smith got busy with some high scoring waves which saw her hold onto the lead throughout the final. Emma beat Chanelle Botha and Crystal Hulett who finished in 2nd and 3rd.

Conditions had become challenging with onshore winds upsetting the wave surface as the premier U20 ASP Pro Junior Men hit the water for their final. Dylan Lightfoot against Diran Zakarian. Lightfoot only caught 3 waves in final choosing to wait for the good looking waves. Zakarian went for many waves going for big moves on each one. Lightfoot’s approach paid off as he sealed the win ahead of Zakarian.

Matt McGillivray was awarded the BOS Surfer Of The Contest award by pulling off two of the biggest air moves of the event. Dylan Lightfoot won the Nixon WTA award for the highest heat score, 16.5 out of a possible 20, and took home a Nixon Supertide watch.
