Beatenberg have made their presence in the South African music scene known by transforming themselves from a small Cape Town band to a band with a national footprint, successful radio play and a mass of music fans. About to drop their new album “The Hanging Gardens”, we chatted to the band about it and more. See what they had to say.
You guys are about to drop your new album entitled The Hanging Gardens. Tell us about the process leading up to this album?
We’ve worked on this album for nearly two years. We’ve worked incredibly hard, especially towards the end of the process where every detail counts. The joys have been hearing final mixes and feeling very proud of our work.
How do you think your fans are going to react to the album and its tracks?
We have a very good feeling about our audience response, as we have had an incredible reception to our music so far. We never expected to get so much love from such a wide audience in SA – it’s something we’re really grateful for.
What can fans expect from the new album?
Variety. The album explores a number of styles and sounds, as well as lyrical themes and emotions.
How many tracks does the album include and which ones are you most proud of?
The album has 13 songs. The iTunes deluxe edition includes 3 more. Rob is happiest about “Ithaca”.
Will you be going on tour to launch the new album?
Yes, we will be playing album launch shows in Joburg, Pretoria, Durban, Stellenbosch and Cape Town.
Beatenberg has grown from strength to strength of late. What do you think the reason for this is and how has it effected your lives?
We are working with a great team with our management and at our label. All the radio stations in SA have shown incredible support for our music, and then (perhaps most importantly) the listeners are our biggest encouragement. The change from being a small Cape Town band to having this incredible radio success and national footprint has been extremely meaningful to us. We feel that we are doing the right thing with our lives.
You have been announced as the opening band for the upcoming Thirty Seconds to Mars Tour. What was your reaction when you found out?
We were really excited to hear the announcement. It’s going to be an incredible experience opening for one of the world’s biggest rock bands.
What does this mean to you as a band?
It gives us the confidence to believe that we are on the right track.

What are you looking forward to most during the Thirty Seconds to Mars tour?
Probably seeing an epic, world class performance.
Will you be changing anything up in terms of band practice, songs, etc, leading up to the tour?
Yes, we will practice intensely so that we can deliver the songs to the fullest of our ability.
Explain the members of Beatenberg in 10 words?
Largo, Lento, Adagio, Andante, Moderato, Allegro, Presto, Accelerando, Rubato, Crescendo.
How do you interpret the term “Living the Dream”?
Living the dream must mean doing what you love.

What’s next for Beatenberg?
More fun music videos and hopefully an international tour!
